“But I bet you don’t even like me. No one at
the orphanage liked me, they all hated me…”
Ethan blinked, his expression softening.
“I don’t hate you.”
I stopped crying and threw my arms around
his waist.
“That’s great! You don’t hate me! You like
me!”
Ethan tensed, stiffening, then shoved me
away, his eyes darkening again.
“Get off me. Don’t touch me again unless I
say so.”

Yep, definitely a psycho. Moody as hell.
Mr. Vandergelt chuckled from the front seat,
telling Ethan to be nice to me.
I knew this family was really just me and
Ethan.
His dad was always traveling for work, and I
was going to spend all my time with Ethan.
If I could just get on the good side of this
psycho, everything would be fine.
When we got to the mansion, Mr. Vandergelt
told the housekeeper to put me in the room
next to Ethan’s.
And so, I began my mission to win over Ethan.
L
On my first day of school, I clung to his arm,
sobbing, “I don’t want to be separated from
you! I’m scared!”
Seeing me crying my eyes out, looking like a lost puppy, Ethan couldn’t bring himself to
shake me off.
From then on, I became his number one fan,
always talking about “my brother” with a
proud look on my face.
When I got sick, I refused to take my
medicine unless Ethan coaxed me.
When I couldn’t do my homework, I made him
help me, then asked for a hug as a reward.
I followed him around like a shadow, sticking
to him like glue.
After three years, Ethan had clearly gotten
used to me, and didn’t even seem to mind my
touch.
Even the housekeeper was smiling, saying,
“I’ve never seen Mr. Ethan care about anyone
like this before. You’re so lucky.”
Hearing that, I knew I had him.
That night, during a thunderstorm, I snuck
into his bedroom.
Ethan came out of the shower and saw me in
his bed, his face turning thunderous.
“Ethan, I’m scared! I had a nightmare. Can I
sleep with you, please?”
<
Before he could blow up, I burst into tears.
Ethan’s face was a mess of conflicting
emotions.
Anger, menace, and a hint of helplessness.
Did I push too far?
Crying, I scrambled out of his bed,
apologizing.
“I’m sorry, Ethan. When I was little, my mom
would hold me when it thundered. I just miss
her…”
Ethan’s eyes softened, and he muttered
something under his breath.
Then, as I was about to leave with my pillow,
<
he grabbed my arm and pulled me back.
“Fine. Just stay on your side and don’t make
a sound, got it?”
I was floored.
Did I really win?
That night, I slept in the same bed as Ethan.
Feeling him gently patting my back, a strange
emotion welled up inside me.
Even though I wasn’t with him last time, I
knew him pretty well.
He hadn’t always been such a psycho with
Zoe.
Г
His mom died when he was young, and his
dad was never around.
He craved love and attention.
But Zoe, being the idiot she was, turned into
a socialite, flaunting her wealth and making
friends with all the wrong people.
She was hostile towards Ethan, seeing him as
an obstacle to inheriting the Vandergelt
fortune.
She even tried to hire someone to kidnap him
and get rid of him, which was why he broke
her legs and disfigured her.
I knew my place.
<
I was going to “love” the psycho out of Ethan.
And now, I had.
I even felt a sense of loyalty towards him.
“Ethan, I’m going to get stronger so I can
protect you.”
I said it from the heart.
Ethan paused, then chuckled, “You’re just a
kid. Worry about yourself.”
Time flew by.
Ethan was now in college, and I was officially
an adult, just finishing my senior year.
I saw Zoe again at my eighteenth birthday
<
party.
She was trailing behind the rich couple,
wearing a dress, looking all elegant and
polished.
She had the same refined look as a new
starlet.
But her face was drawn and lifeless.
She looked like she’d been through the
wringer.
