CHAPTER 29

Matteo’s POV
Without wasting a second, Jeoff pulled out his own phone, already issuing orders to the men on standby. His actions should have reassured me, but it did not. Not when the minutes dragged on like hours, and Amara was not yet in front of me.
I sat on the edge of the desk, gripping the edge so tightly that my knuckles turned white.
What if something happened to her? What if someone-
No.
I forced the thought away, clenching my jaw as I prevented another thought from coming in.
After several minutes, Jeoff‘ s phone buzzed, and he stepped aside, murmuring into it before turning back to me. “They

have found the car.”
I straightened and asked. “Where?”
“Under a bridge on the outskirts of the city.” He hesitated. “The driver‘ s body
was found near it.”
My stomach dropped hearing the news. The driver‘ s dead. “And Amara?” I
asked.
“She is not in the scene. So there is a huge chance that she is still alive,” Jeoff replied and I frowned.
“Of course she is, Jeoff. She can’t be dead,” I spat and grabbed my coat. “Get the men there now,” I ordered, “And the I.T., have them search every street and traffic camera from the last route Amara took. I want answers.”
“Yes, Boss.”
I did not wait for him to follow me as he made another call while moving behind.
The driver was dead. That much was clear.

But Amara?
She had to be alive.
My fingers drummed against the steering wheel while Jeoff relayed my orders to the men. He was watching the footage on the tablet passed to him by the I.T. team after identifying some of the routes the car had
taken..
When we arrived, the scene was already swarming with my men, their dark suits making them stand out against the dim, graffiti–covered underpass. The car was there, abandoned, its doors wide open like a silent scream for help.
I stepped out of the car and the cold night. air suddenly bit at my skin. My men stiffened at my arrival and worked faster with their flashlights scouring the area, knowing full well that I did not want any of them idling in a corner, doing nothing. They knew better than to waste time when I was like this.

“Where’s the body?” I demanded.
“This way, Boss,” one of the men said, leading me to the edge of the bridge.
The driver lay sprawled on the ground, his lifeless eyes staring up at the sky. His throat had been slit and the blood pooling around him already dried.
I crouched down, examining the scene. My stomach churned, but I pushed the feeling aside. I was used to this, seeing dead bodies, and blood all around. I had killed hundreds to thousands, this was not new to me. But the fact that Amara was involved in this, was making my heart clench.
“What did you find?” I asked Jeoff, who stood beside me after talking to Sauron, the man leading the search in here.
“Nothing so far,” he admitted. “The car‘ s been wiped clean. No prints, no evidence. Whoever did this knew what they were doing.”
I nodded, my jaw tightening, thinking of

the fact that whoever had done it was not new to this, they were used to doing such crime. “Keep looking. I want every inch of this place searched. If there is so much as a damn hair left behind, I want to know.
about it.”
Jeoff nodded, already barking orders to the
men.
I turned my attention back to the driver. My gaze swept over his lifeless body, searching for anything that could give me a clue. A thread to pull. I had trained my men very well, in cases like this, where they were ambushed or targeted
unexpectedly and they could not survive, they had to leave something behind, a clue, whatever it was that we could find to avenge them.
And there I saw it.
Something small, almost unnoticeable, peeking out of the inner pocket of his coat.
