Chapter3
“Bang!”
With a loud crash, the two cars collided.
Marta was confident; although the cars had crashed, the damage was not severe.
I unbuckled my seatbelt and, moments later, saw Irvin angrily get out of his car.
Marta tried to move, but I held her down. “Don’t move, rich women don’t get out to check accidents.”
Sure enough, Irvin walked over and knocked on the driver’s side window.
When the window rolled down, Irvin opened his mouth, but as soon as he saw me sitting

in the passenger seat, his expression froze.
“Bertha…”
I quickly switched to a smiling face. “Darling? What are you doing here? It’s just that my friend was driving too fast.”
Irvin furrowed his brows and looked at Marta in the driver’s seat.
Good, she had followed my instructions.
Now Marta was casually scrolling on her phone, not even looking up. “Oh, so this is Bertha’s husband?”
Irvin’s anger made the veins on his forehead bulge, but he repressed it, probably because I was still there.
“Who’s this?”

“Oh, this is my friend, Cora. She just came back from Europe, so she’s not used to driving, and that’s why the accident happened.” I introduced her, patting Marta’s shoulder.
Marta finally smiled and put down her phone, looking at Irvin. “Sorry about that, I’ll have my assistant bring over the payment soon.”
Irvin was momentarily stunned before his gaze shifted to Marta’s neck.
The necklace I had picked out for her earlier -Bvlgari’s latest style–rented for several thousand a day.
My husband’s greatest strength was his obsession with flashy things, and I could already see him calculating in his mind.

Irvin forced a smile. “It’s alright. Since she’s Bertha’s friend, no need for compensation. It’s also dinner time, how about you both come home with me?”
I turned my face away, subtly smiling with satisfaction.
The fish had taken the bait.
Back at the house, I went into the kitchen to cook, occasionally glancing at Marta and Irvin.
“Bertha, you live in such a place? Are your parents really okay with this?” Marta looked around the house with disdain.
Irvin lowered his head, showing a little impatience. “The house is indeed a bit small,

but I’ll buy Bertha a bigger one in the future.”
I chopped the meat harder, a mockery rising in my heart.
Buy a bigger one for himself, right?
If he killed me, that insurance payout would be substantial.
Add in the assets he had transferred earlier, and he would live comfortably for the rest of his life.
But, as always, once people get a portion, they always want more.
“Darling, could you get Cora a glass of water?” I called out to the living room.
Irvin finally stood up and went to the kitchen to get Marta some water.

He quietly asked me, “Bertha, what’s Cora’s background? I don’t remember you ever mentioning her. Those jewels and watches, they don’t seem cheap.”
I put down the knife and stared at him. “Oh, she used to be my distant cousin, but her family was very poor. Somehow, after going abroad, she became incredibly rich. I heard she bought more than ten villas as soon as she returned.”
I exaggerated as I spoke.
Irvin frowned, a bit suspicious, but nodded and took the water out to the living room.
The plan was progressing smoothly.
During dinner, I pretended to be warm and invited, “Cora, we haven’t seen each other

in so long. Why don’t you stay with us a few more days?”
Marta picked up some food and nodded. “Sure, I just got divorced, and I could use a sister to talk to.”
We didn’t speak much after that.
But Irvin seemed increasingly restless…
