Chapter 2
I despised Sophia.
If she were a gold digger, I would have gladly handed over all my wealth just to make her leave Samuel.
But I had met her. She was gentle, kind, and completely uncalculating–a perfect angel.
So even though I felt miserable and jealous, I still forced myself to smile and praise them as a match made in heaven.
I guarded my secret carefully, never daring to show a single hint of my true feelings. Because I knew–Samuel didn’t love me. He didn’t even see me as a younger sister.
The way he looked at me carried that

unmistakable sentiment: “My little girl is growing up.”
Sophia was six years younger than him. So I often wondered–if six years was acceptable, then what about thirteen? Could he… at least try?
Samuel took me to the company to assert authority, showing no mercy to those who had attempted to undermine me.
If he had even a sliver of greed, taking everything from me would have been effortless.
Yet he chose the hardest path. After I came of age, he guided me to take over the company, and to avoid any conflict of interest, he left for a quiet life abroad with Sophia.

That night at a banquet, Samuel escorted me through a crowd of business elites, whispering in my ear who was trustworthy and who I should beware of.
A tipsy man staggered toward me, raising his glass. “Miss Martin, a toast to you!”
“No, she can’t-”
“Mr. Bennett, I’ll drink to that. Cheers!”
Ignoring Samuel’s protest, I downed my drink in one gulp.
For a fleeting moment, his eyes turned cold, and his lips moved slightly as if about to scold me. Instead, he merely gave me a look of disapproval.
“Samuel, I’m twenty–two now. I’m an adult.”

“Yes, the little girl has grown into a young lady.”
He smiled faintly, his voice tinged with resignation.
Perhaps it was the alcohol, but I kept drinking.
On my way to the restroom, I unexpectedly ran into Ryan Cooper–the scumbag who had cheated on me.
Ever since he found out about my fortune, Ryan had been begging for my forgiveness.
“Evelyn, it was that bitch Tina who seduced me! I was just confused for a moment. Please, let’s get back together.”
I scoffed. “Back together? Ryan, you were nothing but a pawn to me. As for Tina… of

course I knew what kind of person she was. Otherwise, why would I have made her my best friend and given you both the chance to betray me?”
In a way, I had to thank them. If not for their betrayal, Samuel wouldn’t have returned so soon. So really, I owed them my gratitude -as well as that “sacrificial pawn” at the company.
“Ryan, I sincerely wish you and Tina the best. If you ever need help, just ask. I’d be happy to assist.””
May you two be bound together forever!
Turning around, I found Samuel standing behind me, his face cold and his presence suffocating.
Feeling guilty, I lowered my head.

Without a word, Samuel walked past me and punched Ryan square in the face.
I had never seen the gentle and refined Samuel so ruthless before.
Ryan tried to fight back, but Samuel, as if transformed, beat him to a pulp.
Fearing things would escalate, I quickly grabbed Samuel and dragged him away.
Before leaving, I transferred fifty thousand dollars to Ryan–so he’d settle things quietly.
