Chapter 6
Ethan ignored the warning and continued speaking to me.
“In his narrative, I am the villain who offends you, while he is the knight who protects you. Evelyn, be careful.”
“Liam, let’s go. Ignore him.”
Liam pulled me away quickly. For some reason, I turned back. Ethan’s expression was calm, as if what had just happened hadn’t affected him in the slightest.
It was only when we were far enough away that Liam slowed down and began venting his dissatisfaction with Ethan.
“My mom did come into the family later, but

she was not a homewrecker! My dad had already divorced his ex–wife when he met my mom. What right does he have to look down on us?!”
I patted the back of Liam’s hand to comfort him.
“From his perspective, there’s no way he would like you or even accept you. But from what I see, your dad treats you very well. Ethan is just jealous of you.”
“No way! My dad actually likes Ethan more. So does everyone in the company–they all see him as more important. No one truly respects me!”
Liam clenched his fists tightly, his voice trembling, almost like a roar. The deep insecurity within him was impossible to miss.

“Liam, no matter how others see you, I will never look down on you.”
“…Evelyn, thank you.”
After returning from the Bennett
household, Douglas called me for a private conversation.
“Evelyn, I’m relieved that you chose Liam. He’s a good kid–way better than that scumbag Samuel.”
“Douglas, I’ve always had my doubts… Why are you so against Samuel?”
Douglas let out a deep sigh.
“Evelyn, I don’t know what kind of spell Samuel cast on your parents, but when I strongly opposed him becoming your

guardian back then, it was because I suspected that your parents‘ accident was linked to him.”
“What?!”
I was shaken to my core.
“Douglas… what are you saying?”
“I originally didn’t want to tell you this because there’s no solid evidence. Back then, the construction site your parents were managing had an accident. To avoid responsibility, they had one of their employees take the fall. That employee… was Samuel’s father. To make amends, your parents took special care of Samuel afterward.”
“So… he approached me for revenge, didn’t he?”

“Evelyn, you’ve always been kind and too trusting of people. But you’re an adult now, and it’s time for you to move on. Forget Samuel.”
While Liam was helping me try on wedding dresses, an unexpected guest arrived.
Sophia requested to speak with me alone.
“Liam and I are about to get married. What is it that you can’t say in front of me?” Liam asked.
Seeing that I didn’t object, Sophia didn’t insist.
“You transferred some shares to Samuel before, but he never accepted them. Recently, though, we’ve run into some trouble. If possible, I hope you can increase

the percentage in the original transfer agreement.”
“Why should I do that? Does Samuel know you’re here?”
Sophia studied me for a moment, then suddenly smiled.
“Don’t you want to know if your parents‘ accident was really related to Samuel? Bring the share transfer agreement to me tomorrow at 10 AM, and I’ll tell you the whole truth.”
Back at home, Liam strongly opposed my decision to go. He thought I was gambling with my parents‘ lifelong efforts.
“I’m going. I have to know the truth.”
Liam’s grip on my arm suddenly loosened.

He parted his lips slightly, looking at me with deep worry.
“Evelyn, you’ll regret this.”
The next day.
The third day, I got into a car accident.
The fourth day.
The fifth day. As the two cars collided, I felt the same helplessness and despair my parents must have felt back then.
“Evelyn! Give me your hand! Hurry!”
