Chapter 7
It was Samuel!
He came to save me.
I only sustained minor injuries, but Samuel insisted on taking me to the hospital to get my wounds dressed–probably afraid that if we waited, they’d heal on their own.
At the hospital, Sophia was practically getting obliterated by Samuel’s icy glare. I felt bad for her and tugged at his sleeve.
“This was my decision. Don’t blame her.”
Sophia pouted.
“Brother, please forgive me and Evelyn”

Samuel remained stone–faced and silent. Only after my wounds were treated did he finally scoop me up in his arms.
“I’m taking Evelyn home. You handle the rest.””
Samuel didn’t say a word the entire way home, no matter how much I tried to get a reaction out of him.
“Come on, you’re being unreasonable. So what if I didn’t tell you in advance? Ethan and Sophia had already set things up in the car. If they hadn’t, I wouldn’t have taken the risk.”
“If you had been harmed by the Bennetts again, I would’ve killed him, even if it cost me my life!”
Our eyes met. Samuel was the first to look

“That’s not true! Samuel, I know my feelings!!”

understand the kind of person I am? You say you love me, but can you guarantee you won’t regret it later? I can’t bear the thought of you telling me one day that you regret everything. That would mean I’d lose even the right to stay by your side…”
I suddenly wrapped my arms around his waist from behind, pressing my cheek against his back.
“Samuel… I won’t regret it. Please trust me. Give us a chance…”
I saw Liam again at the police station. When he noticed me, he forced a smile, though it looked strained.
“Tell me–when did you set me up?”
“When Samuel introduced me to you, it was partly to make you lower your guard

so he could investigate you in secret. But it was also to protect me. After all, if we were officially a couple, even if we got married, you would still have a share of the company, wouldn’t you?”
“So from the start, our relationship was just an act? Evelyn, you’re ruthless.”
“If we’re talking about ruthlessness, no one can compare to your father. He incited my dad’s trusted men to betray him and take my parents‘ lives!”
Liam tried to argue.
“I never wanted to hurt you. I was truly sincere with you…”
“Your so–called sincerity was conditional on me transferring my shares to you. But when you found out I planned to transfer

them away, you were willing to watch me die, weren’t you?”
His silence was all the answer I needed.
One week later, all those responsible for my parents‘ deaths were brought to justice.
Ethan took over the collapsing Bennett Corporation.
“I don’t want to see my mother’s hard work disappear,‘ he said. Samuel, in gratitude for Ethan saving me, promised his full support.
After everything was settled, Samuel and I visited my parents‘ graves.
I left first, but Samuel stayed behind for another hour.
“What took you so long?” I asked when he

…I was repenting.”
I looked at him, puzzled. Samuel turned to me and smiled.
“Evelyn, there’s something I want to say to you.”
