Chapter 36
“We didn’t prepare dinner for you all. If you need anything else, come back next time,” the butler said at the right moment. “Julia, I never thought you’d turn this ungrateful. No wonder Joseph dumped you!”
Leaving these words behind, the Valentine family left. The servants quickly stepped up, putting away the coffee cup set and snacks the Valentine family used. Julia was usually easygoing, but she showed her fierce side only when dealing with the Valentine family. The servants speculated that the Valentine family must be shameless to the core. Julia stayed overnight at the Lopez family’s mansion after dinner to keep Catalina from worrying
Night fell After Byron finished the clinic duties on Julia’s behalf, he stayed on until midnight. He went to the apartment, rubbing his shoulders as he walked, wanting to check if Julia had gone to sleep. Suddenly, he remembered she had returned to the Lopez family’s mansion. Seeing that the lights were off, he guessed she hadn’t returned.
Wearing a super stylish casual outfit, Byron swung his backpack over his shoulder, ready to return to the staff dorms Unexpectedly, he noticed a conspicuous black car parked downstairs. He squinted as he approached, and sure enough, he saw Joseph sitting inside. Joseph’s hand was pressing against his forehead.
“What are you doing here?” Byron asked. He was always sensitive to unusual things and instinctively figured this guy in front of him was here for Julia.
Hearing a voice, Joseph released the hand pressing against his throbbing forehead. He shifted his gaze to the front, and his eyes darkened as he got out of the car,
“Mr. Mullins, quite the free time you’ve got. Instead of being with your beloved, you’re roaming about at someone else’s place?” Byron quipped sarcastically. Just thinking about how Julia once loved a guy like Joseph filled Byron with a stifling feeling, and he couldn’t help but feel confrontational toward Joseph. He thought it was unfair for Julia.
“You’re Byron Farley?” Joseph asked.
Byron scoffed. He was vibrant–looking, exuding the unique energy of his age.
“Wow, your memory is outstanding, isn’t it?” Byron said sarcastically. Joseph used to call him the “little intern” before. This was the first time he remembered his name.
“I recall the Farley family as a medical dynasty with several hospitals but focusing on medical equipment and tech, Joseph said calmly, painting a clear picture of Byron’s background in straightforward terms.
Pupils dilating. Byron glared at Joseph. “Mr. Mullins, you’ve been investigating me?”
Byron’s sunny disposition shifted, his gaze turning intense. If anyone saw this side of Byron, they wouldn’t recognize him as the cheerful youth usually seen around Julia. Though he lacked Joseph’s intimidating aura, Byron was unafraid.
1 het Julia has no clue about the background of her intern, Joseph observed calmly, watching the changes in Byron’s expression.
Sure enough, a flicker of panic flashed in Byron’s eyes when Julia was mentioned. Being young, he hadn’t quite mastered the art of concealing his emotions.
At that moment, Joseph’s countenance grew darker. An aura of coldness emanated from him.
“Mr. Mullins, I heard that Miss Hamilton is carrying your child. Judging by how you’re doting on her, you two must be getting hitched soon, right? Byron quickly steadied himself, retorting with a hint of provocation.
The two of them locked eyes under the moonlight. As tension rises, the atmosphere becomes incredibly strained.
With a disdainful snort, Joseph said, “Julia won’t be living here forever. The relationship between her and me will always be a bit more special than yours.

Chapter 36
Leaving behind this cryptic remark, Joseph returned to his car, revved the engine, and swiftly drove off into the night
Something dawned on Byron, his eyes widening involuntarily. Joseph’s words were too pointed, making him wonder if Joseph knew something
As midnight drew near, Joseph noticed a dozen missed calls on his phone. They were from Amelie and the landline at the villa. Expressionless, he drove back to Fountain Garden
were talking.
Upon entering, he overheard voices coming from the dining area. The maid and the caregiver w
“Miss Hamilton is just impossible to please. She’s perfectly fine, yet she insists on getting Mr. Mullins back. It’s past midnight, and now she wants mushroom soup. Mr. Mullins doesn’t want to come back. What’s that got to do with us! Why does she take it all out on us?” Melissa complained. She would have quit long ago had it not been for the hefty caregiver salary she’s drawing
“Yeah, when Mrs. Mullins lived here, she not only cooked and cleaned with me but also taught me several recipes. This mushroom soup was one of hers. She said Mr. Mullins loves it.” Ashley chimed in instantly.
Ashley expressed regret. “Mrs. Mullins was so kind and meticulous in caring for Mr. Mullins in every way. In contrast. Miss Hamilton lies all the time. Every single time she intentionally breaks something Mrs. Mullins bought, she blames it on me. She often asks me to prepare dinner and then claims she cooked it herself for Mr. Mullins.”
Thinking about Amelie’s past warnings. Ashley shivered and continued. “If someone like her marries Mr. Mullins, my future days…
“Are you speaking the truth?” a cold voice came from outside the kitchen. Ashley and Melissa turned around. Upon seeing Joseph’s displeased expression, they immediately lowered their heads and were too scared to speak.
“Other than what you just said, is there anything else!” Joseph asked again.
Ashley, with a burst of courage, immediately answered. “Mr. Mullins, since you asked. I’ll be straightforward. Miss Hamilton is so cruel. She’s been acting like she’s your wife around here. She even said that once she marries into the Mullins family, she’ll make your mother move far away so she won’t be in her way.” In truth, Amelie had said many more venomous words then, but Ashley stopped herself from repeating them upon seeing Joseph’s icy and fierce gaze at that moment.
Rubbing his throbbing forehead, Joseph sat on the sofa. He had noticed the differences in Amelie from his childhood memories. She was nothing like the gentle and innocent girl she used to be. He attributed her unstable temperament to upheavals she faced overseas and her illness over the past year.
But hearing what Ashley and Melissa revealed today made him feel that Amelie had transformed into someone entirely different from the Amelie he remembered.
“Stop talking about these things from now on. If you’ve faced unfair treatment while working here, I’ll double your compensation,” Joseph said.
Ashley’s and Melissa’s expressions improved considerably.
Glancing at the second floor, Joseph ascended the stairs slowly. He knocked twice when he reached Amelie’s room.

don’t bother me if Joseph isn’t back! Be careful, or I’ll kick all of you out!” Amelie’s voice from inside the room sounded arrogant and showed no signs of illness.
As the door opened and Amelie caught sight of Joseph outside, her angry words stopped abruptly. Her expression momentarily turned vulnerable. Joseph, you’re finally back. My stomach was hurting just now.
His dark eyes flickered slightly, and Joseph said in a low tone. “Your voice didn’t sound like you were in pain.
Amelie wasn’t sure how much of her words Joseph had heard, and a hint of guilt flickered in her eyes. But she continued quickly. “I was in so much pain just now. That’s why I couldn’t help but raise my voice. Joseph, you have no idea. The servant and caregiver in this house don’t take good care of me. When you’re not around, they’re always gossiping about me and making fun of me behind my back.”

“Is that so.” Joseph’s tone remained flat.
