Chapter 19
From that day on, Nathen locked himself inside his house and never went out again.
Apart from the occasional visit from Tara, he didn’t see anyone else and didn’t reply to anyone’s
messages.
The room was scattered with empty bottles of alcohol.
He numbed his nerves with alcohol, enabling him to barely survive and continue this endless life of
pain.
On January 21st, the quiet door that had been silent for a long time was suddenly knocked on.
Nathen woke up from a hangover, with a pair of lifeless eyes, staring blankly at the light and
shadows on the wall.
The people outside the door continued to watch persistently, wave after wave, without a break.
Nathen heard it, but it was as if he hadn’t heard it.
In the afternoon, he struggled to his feet with his emaciated body and walked to the door.
Kenna, who had been knocking on the door for three hours, was running out of patience and was
pounding on the door as a way to vent her frustration.
So when the door suddenly opened without warning, she couldn’t hold back her strength and
rushed straight into the room.
Nathen instinctively raised his hand to create a barrier between them, creating distance. The look
in his eyes was only indifference as he gazed at her.
“What happened?”
Kenna didn’t expect that after such a long time apart, his attitude towards her would make a
180–degree turn like this, a hint of unwillingness flashed in his s eyes.
But soon, she adjusted the expression on her face and showed a worried and concerned look.
“Nathen, I couldn’t reach you these days. Are you okay?”
Nathen lowered his eyes, avoiding her gaze, and his tone returned to the polite and distant manner he had when they first met.
“It’s okay, you can go.
“Let’s not contact each other anymore in the future.”
Upon hearing these words, Kenna instantly became anxious and grabbed his hand tightly.

“I knew you were feeling sad now, so I came to find you, wanting to be with you. Can you please not reject me?”
**The moment her hand came over, Nathen recoiled as if he had been electrocuted.
He took a few steps back, looked over with a calm face, and his voice carried a hint of coldness.
“I didn’t need your concern.”
“Nathen, what’s wrong with you? Didn’t we agree to travel together? Did you forget?”
When he hears her mention this matter, Nathen cannot help but recall all that happened in the past.
That familiar feeling of suffocation surged up again, pressing down on him and preventing him from catching his breath.
His chest heaved violently, his tone filled with anger.
“I said, the past is the past, the future is the future, we stop here, let’s pretend we never knew each
other!”
Seeing his determined attitude, Kenna couldn’t help but feel angry too, and her tone became very
excited.
“Haven’t we met before? Have you forgotten the sunsets we watched together, the long streets we walked on? Have you forgotten the song you sang to me? Everything clearly happened, how can I
pretend it didn’t?”
The memories that once brought Nathen infinite joy became burdens that could crush him after
Melanie left.
Because of his greed for these moments of pleasure, he betrayed his promise, disappointed his true
love, and drove his wife to death.
He felt deeply guilty and believed that redemption would be extremely difficult.
So upon hearing these heart–wrenching words, he could no longer control his emotions, and his eyes were filled with sorrow.
“Those things should never have happened from the beginning! I’m sorry, Melanie. It was me who broke this family apart with my own hands!”
Kenna thought that there were no longer any obstacles between herself and Nathen, and they could be together openly and honestly.
But little did he know that Melanie had already died, and he was still carrying such a heavy
emotional burden.
She has always looked down upon that disabled person. Now, he wants to cut off ties with her for the

sake of mourning, which makes her even more furious. She even spoke without thinking for a
moment.
“People die like a extinguished lamp, no matter how much you miss her, she can never come back! People always have to look forward, so why don’t you forget about her and stay by my side? The time we spent together was so happy, don’t you remember?”
