The first voice to be heard was Victor’s, filled with rage.
“Who would want to come to this place? If it weren’t for Dad forcing us, how could we have
left Santarisom’s best private school!”
Rosalind chimed in angrily, “Why did you kick us out? You’re just a country bumpkin, a filthy…“.
Victor continued, “A filthy lowborn! A pariah! She seduced my father, forcing us to leave the
noble school and come to this godforsaken place! It’s all her fault!”
Rosalind began to sob, “I miss Grandma… I want to go home…”
I instinctively touched my chest. Once, just thinking of them would make me sad, but now I
felt unusually calm.
I made some noise, and the room fell silent instantly.
As I pushed the door open, the three children sat at the table, each with a bowl of fish soup.
Perhaps realizing that I had overheard their words, the twins looked a bit restless.
“Mom.” Leo stood up and took the heavy medical box from me.
I washed my hands and returned to see an extra bowl of fish soup on the table.
I smiled, “Mrs. Porter gave birth to a daughter.”
Leo nodded. “Last week, Mr. Porter and I took the bus into the county together. He had a hunch
it would be a girl and said he’d buy some cute onesies in advance.”
Leo and I were talking about ordinary, trivial matters, but it seemed to make the twins
uncomfortable.
Bang!
Victor slammed the table hard and glared straight at me. “You heard what I said, right?”
Without waiting for my reply, Victor said darkly, “Did you think I was afraid you’d hear? You
don’t deserve to be with Father at all. Because you come from a humble background and have
no powerful connections for us to rely on, when Rosalind gets married and I enter the business
world, we’ll all be looked down upon!”
I held down the furious Leo and calmly looked at the twins, asking softly, “If I weren’t here, how
could you exist?”
Victor and Rosalind were both stunned.
Later, Albert came to pick up the twins.
When we were all silent, someone rushed over.
“Dr. Bright! Odelia just had a fall. She can’t stop bleeding!”
Before I could turn around, Leo had already run over with a medical kit in one hand and a flashlight in the other.
“It’s getting dark, Mom. I’ll go with you.”
Albert stepped in front of us and reached out to Leo. “Give me the medical kit.”
But Leo eyed him warily.
Albert turned to me, his eyes deep. “I’ll drive you there. It’ll be faster.”
I grabbed the first aid kit and walked briskly towards Albert’s Land Rover.

Inside the car, I immediately pulled up Odelia’s electronic medical record and studied it
carefully.
Albert turned up the car’s interior lights, and the soft light fell on my side.
I ignored his actions and was fully focused on the medical record.
“Do you want some water?” Albert suddenly asked.
“No.” I didn’t look up and replied briefly.
A moment later, Albert asked again, “Do you want something to eat? I can have your favorite restaurant’s takeout sent here.”
“I’m not hungry.” I remained focused on the medical record.
After a while, Albert spoke again, “The temperature inside the car…”
“Could you please be quiet?”
I frowned sharply and looked up at Albert. After a moment’s pause, I said, “It’s urgent now. Please don’t disturb me.”
Odelia suffered greatly during her pregnancy.
She had severe morning sickness, edema all over her body, and difficulty breathing. By the seventh month of her pregnancy, she even had blurred vision.
She finally made it to her due date, but no one expected an emergency to occur.
Odelia seemed to have a premonition. Her emaciated fingers tightly grasped my wrist. “Save the baby, please… It doesn’t matter if I die, but my child must be fine!”
