I calmly moved her hand away and said in a steady tone, “The survival of the child depends on your will. If you live, the child will be born. But if you give up, he will die too.”
Odelia gritted her teeth and strained with all her might.
Upon leaving Odelia’s, I saw Albert waiting for me by the car, with my coat in hand.
The night was misty, subtly scented with jasmine.
There was a time when I too waited like this, with a coat and alone, for him to come home
after work.
The headquarters of the Austin Group was far away, and it took half an hour to drive from the
villa where we lived to the Austin Manor.
Every day after work, he would go to Paul to report on his work.
I was worried that he would be tired, that he would catch a cold from the rain, and that he
would forget to have dinner, so I prepared a coat, an umbrella, and a thermos to pick him up.
At first, I could still wait for him in the living room of the Austin Manor.
Later, he wouldn’t let me in, so I waited in the car.
And then, he even forbade me from picking him up.
“There are so many people in the company. Mother will take care of those things. Even if you
have nothing to do, don’t come to the headquarters so often.”
I always kept these words in mind.
I kept a proper distance from him and nodded slightly. “Mr. Austin, thank you for bringing me
here.”
“We were a couple anyway. Why so distant?” He averted his gaze and stepped aside. “Get in
the car.”
“No.” I looked at him and said softly, “I just finished a delivery, stained with blood, so I won’t
take your car.”
I borrowed an umbrella from Odelia’s family and walked alone towards the road, bypassing
the expensive Land Rover.
In the early autumn, by the artificial lake on the roadside, the lotus flowers were withering and the leaves were drooping, presenting a scene of decline.
Although the flowers might fall this year, the lake would still be rippling with splendor next
year.
In sharp contrast to this was the elaborately designed ornamental pool in the Austin Manor, with never–fading flowers and always the same scenery.
Suddenly, footsteps sounded behind me.
I stopped and turned to face Albert.
He was dressed in a high–end suit and still looked elegant, but his custom–made leathe shoes were now covered in mud on the muddy path after the rain.
This scene seemed so weird.
Whether in the nget or now Albert and I had never been a good match.

I stopped and turned to face Albert.
He was dressed in a high–end suit and still looked elegant, but his custom–made leather shoes were now covered in mud on the muddy path after the rain.
This scene seemed so weird.
Whether in the past or now, Albert and I had never been a good match. “Albert.”
I finally called out his name.
Albert was stunned for a moment, a glimmer of hope flashing in his eyes, and his tone betrayed his joy. “You…”
I interrupted him, “Why did you bring the children to see me?”
Albert was silent for a moment before slowly speaking, “There have been many
misunderstandings between us. I hope you can come back to Santarisom with me and we can be a family again.”
I slightly turned my head to him, remaining silent.
The usually taciturn Albert was now unusually talkative.
“I’m cold and distant, but I wasn’t intentionally ignoring you. When dealing with people, I’m used to calculating gains and losses. But with you, I lost my rationality and didn’t know how to be good to you or what was right. It won’t happen again, Irene. I’ve realized my feelings. I…”
Albert could no longer contain his excitement and finally confessed, “I love you.”
I gazed at his face, lost in thought.
If it were in the past, even just a glance from Albert would have made my heart race.
But now, I was surprised to find my heart strangely calm.
“Irene.” Albert approached and held my hand. “I’ve never remarried. You’re the only one in my
heart.”
