Drake snorted, unfazed by her sharp wat “I don’t understand what Marion sees in you”
Apart from her looks and quick tongue, he couldn’t fathom what made her special.
“Once you’ve eaten your fill, get out I’ve arranged a room for you to rest in. Once you’ve gathered your strength, I’ll take you to the casino tomorrow,” he said
Debra perked up at that “Wait, you’re still going to take me? But I didn’t finish cleaning the wine cellar.”
“Consider it a special favor,” Drake said, rising from his seat and striding toward the door.
Opening it, he called out, “Lara, take her to her room. I need to sleep”
“Yes, boss,” Lara replied, stepping in to help Debra up “Ms Frazier, please follow me.”
Debra cast one fast glance at Drake, noting the exhaustion etched on his face. Just before leaving, she swiped a handful of pastries from the table.
Lara led her to a neatly prepared guest room “Ms. Frazier, you’ll be staying here tonight. If you need anything, just ring the bell by the bed ”
“Got it. You can go,” Debra said dismissively.
Lara wisely took the hint and exited, closing the door behind her.
The room was simple but clean. After a quick scan for hidden cameras, Debra collapsed onto the bed, utterly
drained.
The show she had been putting on had taken a toll. She stared blankly at the ceiling, rejoicing that she had passed out under stress
If luck hadn’t been on her side, things wouldn’t have spelled well for her.
Drake would escort her to the casino tomorrow, and without Kale around, she could observe everything more easily and even pull some tricks. Drake probably wouldn’t even notice.
With these thoughts swirling in her mind, Debra drifted off to sleep.
When she finally stirred, it was already afternoon
“She’s still not up?”
“No, boss Should I go in and wake her?”
Debra caught snippets of Drake and Lara’s conversation through the door as she rubbed her eyes, sitting up in
bed
Memories of last night’s chaos–shattering wine barrels, swimming in wine, scrubbing the cellar floor, and the exhausting back–and–forth with Kale–flooded back
No wonder she felt so drained.
Drake was supposed to take her to the casino today. She couldn’t afford to miss this chance. Dragging her weary body to the door, she called out, “I’m awake. If you’ve got something to say, come on in.”
