Chapter 7
From clothes to toys, everything was prepared for both a boy and a girl.
There was also a half–finished sketch of the baby on the bed.
I picked it up, and tears involuntarily fell from the corners of my eyes.
If only Dwayne had taken a moment to drive me to the hospital.
If only the emergency miscarriage surgery had gone smoothly that day…
We could have been happy parents.
But life doesn’t work that way. Missed opportunities can never be reclaimed.
The one who’s at fault must face the
consequences.
I took out my phone and sent the message I had drafted on the plane, then packed my things and went to the hospital with

Dwayne.
On the way, Dwayne’s phone kept buzzing with incoming messages. As he replied, I glimpsed the name “Annie” on the
screen.
This was what he meant by blocking all
contact details.
Annie had written, “Remember to come find me when you‘ re done, I’ll be waiting for you at home!”
A smile played on Dwayne‘ s lips as he quickly typed back. Then he turned to me, his face filled with concern, “Honey, are you feeling okay?”
The words made me feel nauseous.
Once we arrived at the hospital, Dwayne rushed straight to the outpatient clinic to register, insisting on signing us up with the best specialist.
As we passed the medical guidance desk, a young nurse waved to me and asked kindly,

“Ms. McGee, are you recovering well? What tests are you here for today?”
I smiled politely and replied, “Prenatal check–up.”
The nurse looked at me in surprise, then glanced at Dwayne beside me. Finally, under Dwayne’s confused gaze, the nurse
fell silent.
Yes, the day I had the miscarriage, my cries echoed throughout the entire floor, and everyone heard them… except for Dwayne.
During the prenatal check–up, Dwayne stayed by my side every step of the way, afraid to miss a single moment with the child.
I was growing more and more curious— what would he do when he found out that the child was gone?
Lying on the hospital bed for the color ultrasound, I felt eerily calm, my mind empty.

I was simply waiting for the result.
The doctor’s instrument moved over my lower abdomen, and Dwayne stood beside me, frowning, holding his breath and not daring to speak.
Then the screen displayed the emptiness of my lower abdomen.
“How… how could this be?!”
“Where’s my child?!”
Dwayne’s outburst startled the doctor. The doctor, visibly nervous, explained, “No. embryo was found in the lower abdomen… This lady is not pregnant.”
“Or maybe the woman was once pregnant, but the baby is gone.”
“Impossible!” Dwayne grabbed the doctor’s hand almost desperately, repeatedly pressing the instrument against my stomach, as if hoping to find his child.
His frantic behavior caused a stir, and soon
medical staff from outside rushed into the

room.
“Tell me, where is my child?!” Dwayne threw the instrument aside, grabbed the
doctor’s collar, and slammed him against
the wall.
The room was quickly filled with staff, all attempting to calm Dwayne down.
I slowly stood up, gathered my clothes, and walked over to him. Looking directly into his eyes, I said each word clearly:
“Dwayne, our child has been gone for a long time.”
“It’s impossible! Annie said the abortion report was fake. You’re all lying to me!”
I smiled coldly. It seemed Dwayne had never truly believed it because Annie had been convincing him otherwise.
I reached into my bag, pulled out the medical record from the day of the
incident, and threw it in Dwayne’s face. It contained everything from my hospital

Several nurses in the crowd recognized me.
