When I was eight months pregnant, the mistress of my husband, Darell Bourn, pushed me down the stairs.
Darell rushed me to the hospital. Luckily, our baby was born safely.
The agony of childbirth overwhelmed me, and I lost consciousness. By the time I woke up, both Darell and our baby were gone.
I looked for my baby everywhere and overheard the conversation between Darell and the doctor outside the morgue.
“Mr. Bourn, the baby was still breathing. Why did you tell us it was dead? That was your own flesh and blood!”
“I have only one child, and Kara is the mother,” Darell said coldly. “Kara gave birth to a baby boy yesterday. I promised her our baby boy would be the only heir to the Bourn family. I won’t allow anyone to challenge his inheritance.”
It turned out my baby was dead.
Darell wanted to replace my baby with Kara Motley’s!
A chilling numbness spread through my body. I had never realized my husband was such a ruthless monster.
The marriage I once cherished was nothing more than a cold, endless abyss.

The doctor looked hesitant. “If you switch Mrs. Bourn’s baby with Ms. Motley’s, what if Mrs. Bourn finds out?”
“Newborns all look the same. She won’t suspect a thing. I’ll bring the baby
to her soon.
“Dispose of the body properly. And get me that sterilization drug your hospital developed, the one that ensures a woman will never conceive again. I want Violet to take it.”
Shocked, the doctor said hastily, “Mr. Bourn, you’ve already killed Mrs. Bourn’s child just to bring Ms. Motley’s son into the family. Do you really have to go this far? This is beyond cruel.”
The cold air from the morgue seeped out, but Darell’s words were even more chilling. “I promised Kara that our child would never suffer. He won’t have any siblings competing with him for attention or inheritance. Even though she’s married to another man, I need her to have peace of
mind.”
The doctor was still hesitant. “Mr. Bourn, I’m obliged to remind you that the drug has just been developed and hasn’t been put into clinical trials yet. Its side effects are extremely severe. Are you really sure about this?”
After a brief pause, Darell sighed, “I have no choice. Violet is about to wake up. If we perform a hysterectomy now, she’ll get suspicious.
“She’ll just have to endure it. I’ll make it up to her later, but I can’t allow her to have another child.”
In the next second, his phone rang. He put it on speaker, and a man’s excited voice immediately echoed in the morgue. “Mr. Bourn, I’ve received the 800,000 dollars. Don’t worry. I’m leaving New York now Mrs. Bourn will never know that you were the one who ordered me to push her down the stairs.”

Footsteps sounded from inside.
Enduring the great pain in my leg. I stumbled back to the hospital room.
Thinking of my baby’s small, lifeless body in the morgue, I clutched my chest tightly, tears streaming down onto my bandaged leg.
So, the fall at the mall wasn’t an accident.
It was my loving husband, clearing the way for the woman he truly loved and their child.
Our baby was killed by Darell, his own father.
To him, my baby and I were nothing but obstacles.
“Violet. You’re awake.”
Darell walked in, cradling a baby in his arms, smiling as he sat beside my bed.
“Look at our son. Doesn’t he look just like us?
“Thank you for giving me such a cute child. I promise I’ll be the best. father.”
My gaze fell on the sleeping baby in his arms, and my heart clenched in pain.
Darell was wrong. No mom would mistake her own child.
The baby had Darell’s eyes, and his nose and chin were almost identical to Kara’s.
It was their baby.

And my baby was nothing more than a cold, lifeless corpse.
“Violet, does your leg still hurt? Here, take some painkillers.”
The concern and tenderness in his eyes were the same as always. But now, I knew it was just a facade to deceive me.
I looked down at the pills in his hand, remembering what I had just overheard.
“Darell, pills are so bitter. Can I take them later?”
I thought, “You’ve already killed my child. Can’t you at least let me keep the right to be a mother?”
