Chapter 16
“Dad?”
My mother’s expression became somewhat complicated, then quickly changed to a smile.
“Oh my, I’m so sorry. My old eyes must be failing me. I was mistaken.”
“Please don’t take it to heart. Come inside, it’s very cold out
here.”
My mother pulled him inside while whispering to me.
“I was muttering under my breath why this supposedly 22–year–old looked older than his actual age.”
“Okay.”
Jasper stood frozen for several seconds before uttering just one
word.
“Okay.”
Okay what?
I first settled Jasper in the private room, then pulled my mother outside.

“After breaking up, you got together with his father?”
“No, absolutely not!”

He’s currently collaborating on a project with the company where I’m interning. My boss is outside taking a call. In short, I have no relationship with him whatsoever; I’m merely an employee at the company.
Please don’t create trouble for me.
“If you have no relationship at all, why are you wearing his coat?”
“And without giving me any heads–up! Were you trying to see if your mom’s eyes still work?”
I was speechless.
My mom asked again.
“Did his son abandon you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“We just weren’t compatible.”
Chapter 16
“You dated for three years and were always compatible, but suddenly became incompatible right before graduation?”

“I’ve been there before. You think your mother doesn’t know? When couples break up around graduation, it’s usually because the family objects and starts finding more suitable matches for their child.”
“Well, that’s all in the past now.”
In the past? What past? I can’t get over it at all.
years.
“His family is indeed wealthy, but you dated for three Mom knows you have your pride and rarely spent his money. I even made Sichuan–style cold rabbit dishes several times for you to bring to him. What right do they have to look down on us?”
My mother truly understands me best.
“Don’t worry, I’ll prepare some delicious dishes for them.”
