A friend asked me why, as Ryan’s father, I wasn’t interfering with his relationship.
I merely smiled.
“Interfere with what? It’s just dating, not marriage.”
I heard they’ve been dating for three years.
Quite a long time.
This is probably the longest Ryan has persisted with anything since birth.
However, the girl’s family is not financially well–off.
My friend said.
“They’re about to graduate. If your son moves in with his girlfriend after graduation, you’re only 32–you might be holding a grandchild by next New Year.”
Though it was just a joke, it was the first time I seriously considered this issue.

“I heard that girl’s family isn’t doing well financially. Adapting to someone with different circumstances than yours can be troublesome. Have you thought this through?”
After pondering for a moment, he asked me.
“Dad, you don’t like her?”
Hmm?
How could I like or dislike someone I’ve never even met?
“I wouldn’t say I dislike her.”
“Why don’t you like her? Is it because of her family’s financial situation?”
A family’s economic status and material conditions are indeed factors worth considering.
Ryan volunteered to prove to me that he could develop a relationship with that girl and make it work.
His method of proof was to intern at the company for a month and show me his work results.

If he performed well, I would agree to let him be with that girl.
I advised him that a month was barely enough time to get started, let alone achieve any results, and suggested he try for
three months.
He refused.
He only needed one month.
During that month, he either arrived late and left early, or argued with his supervisors, refusing to do any work. In the end, he quit before completing even half a month.
He rushed to my office, his face filled with indignation.
“Dad, I give up. Stop pushing me. I promise I’ll break up with her.”
Me?
My friends all advised me not to pressure him too much.
This is an era of free love, they said, and I should be careful not to push him too hard, or he might jump off a building for love.
After hearing this many times, I began to wonder if I had been too strict with him.
But just two days after breaking up, he excitedly came to tell me he was dating again.
