Chapter 8
Charles, still clinging to the remnants of his obsession, tried to chase after me. Elsie grabbed him from behind and they began to struggle.
No one could have predicted what would happen next. In an attempt to break free from Elsie’s grasp, Charles shoved her back with force.
And then, as if in slow motion, a car came barreling down the road behind her.
The screech of emergency brakes cut through the air.
When I turned around, I saw Elsie soaring through the air before crashing to the ground, motionless.
The scene erupted into chaos. People scrambled to call the police and emergency services, panicked voices filling the air.
Even Charles, standing frozen and staring

at Elsie’s bloodied, broken body, couldn’t bring himself to move. His face drained of color, his hands clutching his head as he muttered over and over, “I
didn’t mean it. I didn’t mean it…”
After that day, I never heard a word about them again.
Finally, life began to feel calm.
Years later, my university classmates decided to have a reunion, eager to reconnect after so much time apart.
I went with Jasper by my side.
When people saw that the hand I was holding wasn‘ t Charles‘ s, their surprise. was obvious.
“Wait, you didn’t marry Charles?”
“Yeah, when he posted that marriage certificate, we all thought you two were hitched.”
I smiled, shaking my head, squeezing Jasper‘ s hand as I introduced him. “This

is my one and only husband.”
The teasing came in waves and soon the conversation shifted. People began.
searching the room, clearly wondering where Charles was.
As the reunion began winding down and Charles still hadn’t shown up, a
latecomer, once close to him, finally spoke
- up.
“Charles? He probably couldn’t make it.”
“After some… issues, he married his childhood friend, but for some reason, he kept trying to divorce her.”
“His childhood friend wouldn’t agree, so they never went through with it.”
“Then, he found out her illness was all a lie. Turns out, she’d gotten herself into debt and couldn’t pay it off. She married him just to use him.”
“They had a big fight in the street and she

got hit by a car. She never recovered and ended up paralyzed.”
“Now she’s completely bedridden, can’t even do anything for herself. Forget about attending reunions; Charles can’t even step out to buy groceries without strict timing.”
“Anyway, let’s not talk about it…‘
Hearing about them again after so many years, I felt nothing but a fleeting sense of regret. No other emotion lingered.
I turned to Jasper and said, “We should get going soon, or little Freya will start crying for her daddy again.”
Jasper chuckled softly, pressing a kiss to my forehead. His eyes were filled with warmth and I couldn’t help but smile at the simple, quiet love we shared.
