I forgot to block it.
He froze for a second.
He didn’t say anything and left to take care of
Tiffany.
I watch them leave. It took me a while to feel
the stinging in my face.
I rubbed my swollen face and started
laughing.
I knew that I didn’t belong.
- 6.
In the middle of the night, I was woken up by
Г
As soon as I sat up, someone kicked in my
door.
Stepmom ran in, sobbing. Before I can react, I
get slapped.
“How can you be so cruel?”
“Hurting her wasn’t enough yesterday? Do
you want to kill her?”
Stepmom cried in my dad’s arms. “She knew
that Tiffany was allergic to peaches. She
dumped peach juice all over her bed and
pillow.”
“She wants to kill our daughter!”
“Okay, okay. Stop crying. She took her
୮
Dad looks disgusted. “Sarah, I am so
disappointed in you.”
Stepmom stops crying.
I stared at him. He used to be the closest
person in my life.
He used to love me, I was his only daughter.
He used to spoil me.
But everything changed.
I was like the protagonist in a book that has
had all of her luck stolen.
I used to wonder why, I used to cry.
NOW I NIJUW.
We are not meant to be father and daughter.
The day I moved out.
Dad tells me: “After your mother’s memorial, I
will bring you home.”
I didn’t say anything.
Once they left.
I gathered all the photos of Jason and me,
and my dad and me.
I shredded them and burned them.
Lastly, I shredded the wedding dress that I
bought three years ago.
く
Jason had just confessed his feelings, and
went to buy it.
It was the dress that I always imagined
wearing.
But now, it’s in shreds.
- 7.
Next, it was time to get rid of all the gifts that
Jason gave me.
Some fun little things.
Some were expensive.
I picked out the expensive things and gave
them to my best friend.
After I leave, she would return them to Jason.
く
We would not owe each other anything.
The cheap things were thrown away.
I used to hold them close to my heart.
But now I felt nothing.
I wrapped my mom’s photo and placed it in
my suitcase.
I left the house that I have lived in for ten
years.
Right as I was leaving, Jason’s car pulled up.
I didn’t look at him.
But the car stopped next to me.
<
The window rolled down, it was Jason.
I just glanced at him. I didn’t stop.
“Sarah.”
Jason frowned. “Where are you going?”
I was carrying two huge suitcases.
I didn’t want to talk to him.
I kept walking.
Then Jason got out of the car.
“Do you want the driver to take you?”
“No, thank you.”
Г
I dodged him and kept walking.
Jason grabbed my wrist.” Sarah, why are you
being so stubborn?”
“Just cry. Maybe I will change my mind.”
I yanked my wrist. “Jason, I don’t need you
anymore.
I don’t need to cry, and I don’t need him to
change his mind.
I am exhausted.
“Fine, whatever.”
Jason scoffed, but he didn’t believe me.
く
- 8.
I knew that I would always come running
back.
He has everyone convinced that I would never
leave him.
He also believes it.
I dragged the suitcase and started to leave.
Tiffany said sweetly.
“Jason, you’re here.”
She ran up to Jason and touched his arm.
“Did the allergies get better?”
Jason touched her hair.
L
“Yeah.” Tiffany smiled and looked at Jason.
“Don’t be mad at Sarah.”
She grabbed Jason’s arm and rocked it.
“It’s my fault. My body is so weak. That’s why
Dad made Sarah change rooms.”
“That’s not your fault. She is too bitter.”
Jason looked at me and pulled Tiffany into a
hug.
“Let’s go inside. Don’t let the wind blow on
your face.”
“Okay.”
They hugged and left.
<
I felt nothing.
After my mom’s memorial, my dad didn’t call
- me.
Jason’s birthday came soon.
