We’ve only talked on the phone a few times.
After I said yes, this was the first time we
have seen each other.
We never even held hands, but Heather
thought we were doing something.
“So, Chris, do you have a girlfriend?”
E
く
“I have a cousin, you guys would love her.”
The party was heating up.
Heather was not giving up. “Hey, Chris, check
out Sarah.”
“She’s sweet, pretty, and has a great body.
You guys went to the same school. You
belong together.”
I was so nervous.
Chris’s voice cut through the noise.
“Okay, Heather, leave Sarah alone.”
“She’s shy, you’re embarrassing her.”
<
Heather made a face. “Are you protecting
your girl?”
Chris just smiled.
I glanced at Chris.
He was already looking at me.
My face got hot, I looked away.
Then my phone buzzed.
Chris: “Meet me after dinner. I’m taking you.
home.”
“Ok.”
Chris: “Good girl.”
Г
My heart was going crazy.
- 12.
I was waiting for Chris in the lobby when the
phone rang.
It was Jason’s friend, Michael.
“Sarah, what’s up? We haven’t seen you.”
“Just busy.”
“Come hang out with us?”
I laughed. “No, you guys go ahead.”
“Hey, wait, it’s like this…”
“Jason’s having a rough night. He’s trashed
<
“If you’re free, can you come check on him?
We don’t want him getting sick.”
“Call Tiffany.”
“Sarah, Jason just told Tiffany to leave.”
“We can tell he still loves you. He regrets it.”
“Stop, Michael. We’re done.”
I clutched the phone, trying to sound calm.
“It’s over. Don’t call me about him again.”
Before I could hang up, there was a scuffle on
the other end.
Someone grabbed Michael’s phone.
<
Jason came over the phone.
“Sarah, they called you. It had nothing to do
with me.”
Always thinking he is better than me.
“Ok. I am hanging up.”
“Sarah…”
Jason called out my name.
I heard the drunk in his voice.
I used to feel bad and tell him to stop
drinking.
But he has nothing to do with me anymore
<
I hung up.
I removed his friends out of my contacts.
We knew each other because of Jason.
Now that we were done, I don’t need to know
them.
“Sarah.”
Chris was standing in the lobby not too far
away.
The light was on his face.
“Chris.”
I stood up and Chris came towards me.
He seemed like he was drunk, he was wobbly.
I was worried, so I helped him. “Chris, are you
sick?”
Chris nodded. He was in pain.
“Sarah, my car is waiting. Help me out there.”
“Yeah, lets go now.”
Chris was way taller than me.
We had a tough time getting to the car.
As we went in the car, I fell into his arms.
I was surrounded by his scent.
く
I tried to get up, but Chris hugged me.
“Sarah, can I hold you?”
- 13.
“Chris…”
“I am not dreaming. It is you, Sarah.”
Chris cradled my face.
Our breaths mixed.
His eyes looked dazed.
My heart was being crushed.
“Chris.”
<
“You’re not dreaming.”
“It’s me, Sarah.”
Before I could say anything, he kissed me.
Soft and nice.
I didn’t know what to do.
He grabbed my hands and sat me down.
The car started and Chris put the window up.
I was getting nervous.
But Chris let go of my hand.
“Don’t be scared, Sarah.”
<
“I’m not gonna do anything to you here.”
He touched my hair. “Sarah, I will wait until
our wedding night.”
I looked down and nodded.
Jason got drunk again.
His friends tried to stop him.
He was mad all the time.
Maybe because he was bored of Tiffany, he
missed Sarah’s nice side.
Last time his friend called, it was because he
wanted to hear my voice.
But I had said no
く
He was angry and said some rude things.
But I just said goodbye and hung up.
She didn’t come to take care of him.
She stayed away from me.
Jason was scared.
But he was trying to not show it.
She loved him.
