Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Bethany Elsher shook her head. “No, he’s still at the office. Should be here any minute,” she said, keeping an eye out for Wallace. Nicole glanced over at Hannah and felt a weight lift, knowing Wallace hadn’t shown up yet. She squinted across the room. “Is that Hannah over there, Mrs. Elsher? Did you invite here” Nicole’s puzzled look said it all.
Bethany followed her gaze and saw Hannah. The former’s happy expression immediately turned grim. “Why is she here? Why would I invite her?” She wasn’t about to let Hannah, who had stirred up a whole lot of mess for the Elsher family, crash her party.
“Huh? Did she sneak in without the invitation?” Nicole then added softly, “Mrs. Elsher…”
Bethany smiled coldly. “Go ahead, Nicky. Do whatever you want. She only wanted Hannah to be humiliated.
“Understood, Mrs. Elsher,” Nicole replied.
When Hannah saw Nicole approaching her, she caught Oliver’s gaze. He hinted at her not to create any trouble. Hannah shrugged. Soon, Nicole stood in front of her. I didn’t want any trouble, but this annoying bitch won’t let me go, Hannah thought.
“How did you get in without the invitation, Hannah?” Nicole asked. As expected, her words attracted the attention of the people around them.
Some people’s gaze changed when they heard Hannah snuck in After all, those who attended the birthday party were rich and noble, so they looked down upon such behavior. People started to gossip.
“You could’ve just said something if you wanted to come,” Nicole added, putting on a show.
Hannah looked calm, and a cold smile adorned her face. Nicole trying to play chess, but she’s barely managing checkers, Hannah thought to herself.
As she stood taller, ready to put Nicole in her place, suddenly someone slid up behind her, hand at her waist, another on her shoulder. Then a voice broke through, a mix of laid–back and ice cold, “She’s with me. Need to see my invitation, or what?!
Turning around, Hannah saw Marcus with his signature smirk, tossing Nicole a look that made her skip a beat. She did not Expect Marcus to be there just in time.
The whispers in the crowd went quiet, and the vibe got all kinds of awkward. They thought, “Marcus is Hannah’s rumored boyfriend. He’s acting like some kind of knight in shining armor.
Even though these folks loved their gossip about Nicole hooking up with Wallace behind the scenes, nobody wanted to step on the Elshers‘ toes in public. Out of the blue, a chilly voice sliced through the quiet. “Mr. Campbell, you’ve got some moves, pulling Campbell Group out of the fire like that.”
That week, Elsher Group had put a lot of pressure on Campbell Group. Wallace had been certain Marcus was nothing but a trust–fund kid with no game. But the guy had surprised everyone by pulling his family’s business back from the brink–not just once, but over and over.
“Thank you for your praise,” Marcus said with a fake smile.
Wallace walked slowly to Nicole’s side, and the latter immediately took his arm and sweetly said, “Wallace.”
Hannah couldn’t help but snicker, which got Wallace looking her way. But she didn’t back down, facing him head–on. He might have saved Nicole from the awkward jam, but Hannah wasn’t about to let Nicole off the hook that
easy.

Chapter 14
When Hannah
Was about to speak, Nicole softly interrupted, “I misunderstood you just now, Hannah. Please forgive me.”
But before Hannah could even react, Marcus had whisked her of both of them scoffing. He ushered her to a table and passed her a glass of bubbly. “Really? Squabbling with that kind of woman embarrasses you?”
Hannah took the champagne but did not drink it. She twirled her glass and said, “Trust me, she’s gonna cause a scene again. tonight”
“Is she a threat to you, Kitty? Marcus smiled casually, apparently not caring about what Nicole would do.
Hannah did not respond. Although she did not know what happened during her marriage for the past two years, she had lost because they had a divorce.
After a while, Marcus went to talk to others. As Oliver was also talking to the others, Hannah was slightly bored. Thus, she went out to the backyard. The fountain in the backyard was glistening under the light. Some guests, who also liked a quiet atmosphere, were seen talking in low voices in the backyard. Hannah sat down by the fountain and played with her phone. A few minutes later, she saw Nicole approaching her with a smile and a look of concern. “Why aren’t you inside, Hannah?” Nicole asked.
