Mom yelled at me for smashing the display
case.
“She’s the one who ripped my rabbit apart.”
“That old rabbit? It doesn’t compare to
CC u
L
Tiffany’s limited-edition stuff.”
“The rabbit was made 14 years ago, and the
company went bankrupt. It’s limited edition
too.”
“Listen to yourself! Is that how an older sister
should act? You’re fighting with your younger
sister over nothing.”
Dad agreed. “You’re the older sister, you have
to let Tiffany have her way.”
I suggested, “Why don’t Mom and Dad get me
two display cases full of limited–edition stuff
too? Maybe I won’t hold a grudge then.”
Mom and Dad left without another word.
They said they felt bad for me.
But when it came to money, they ran away.
I bought some thread and started sewing the
rabbit back together.
My stitches were bad.
The rabbit looked weird.
It wasn’t the same rabbit anymore.
I felt empty.
The rabbit I grew up with was dead.
Smashing a display case didn’t make up for
losing my rabbit.
I petted my rabbit and whispered to it.
“You know how there are dormant
volcanoes?”
“They look safe because they haven’t erupted
in a long time, but lava is building up
underground.”
“They don’t erupt often, but they still could.”
“People worry about active volcanoes, but
they don’t worry about dormant ones. So,
when a dormant volcano erupts, it usually
causes way more damage.”
We were too weak to fight back.
Weaker people need to “borrow” strength.
I kissed my rabbit.
く
“Let’s trigger this volcano.”
