Dylan gestured, and a catering crew walked
in, carrying baskets overflowing with iron–rich
foods.
Ever since we married, after Dylan had
started taking blood from me under the guise
of checkups, he’d schedule a massive iron-
rich meal.
I used to think it was his way of showing love.
Now I knew he just wanted me to pump out
as much blood as possible for Brittany’s
emergencies.
I forced a laugh
<
“I don’t want any of this.”
“And after all these checkups, nothing has
ever come back wrong. Honey, can I stop
doing these blood draws?”
Dylan frowned, then caressed my cheek like
he couldn’t bear to be away from me.
“Sweetheart, your health is so important. We
absolutely can’t stop the checkups.”
“We’re going to be together forever. You have
no idea how much you mean to me. I can’t
risk anything happening to you!”
I would have cried happy tears if I heard this
before.
Now that I knew the truth my heart sank
Г
Dylan was about to feed me when his phone
rang.
His face lit up, his voice excited.
“Honey, I’ve got a situation at the hospital. I
need to run.”
“Be good and eat everything, okay? I’ll check
when I get back.”
I nodded, then dumped the food in the trash
after he left.
As I copied the video in the study, a new post
from Brittany popped up on my phone.
[What’s it like having a childhood best friend
who treats you like gold? Thank you, Dylan,
く
for renting out the entire nospital for me anu
getting the best postpartum care in the
country! Having you by my side through every
important moment is the best! ]
In the photo, Dylan held Brittany’s newborn
baby, tears glistening in his eyes.
The infant’s tiny neck was adorned with the
family heirloom.
I stared.
I accidentally clicked on another hidden file
on the computer.
A lifetime trust agreement appeared.
[I, Dylan, voluntarily give 90% of my assets in
a rotating trust to Brittany and her
descendants 1
<
I wiped away tears.
Was this what Dylan’s love really looked like?
Even if Brittany gave birth to another man’s
child, Dylan would happily give her everything.
I would leave, and never come back.
- 2.
I printed out the divorce papers, and
contacted a company to fake my death for
the next day.
Then, I went to the hospital.
The room was packed with people
congratulating Brittany.
Г
She held the baby and ate the food that Dylan
was feeding her.
Seeing me, Dylan’s eyes widened.
He pulled me aside, whispering.
“Honey, don’t get the wrong idea…Brittany’s husband is out of the country, and she grew
up with us. She’s basically my little sister…”
“I know you haven’t forgiven your parents, but
Brittany and the baby are innocent!”
Brittany was not innocent.
I was about to talk about the divorce, when
Brittany gave me a look of terror, and went
down on her knees.
<
“Reagan! I’m so sorry for everything my family
did! Please, don’t hurt my baby!”
“Let all your anger be directed at me! My
baby doesn’t deserve to be hated.”
I saw that Brittany was shaking, and showing
me her messages.
I saw horror images, and threats against her
baby.
