Chapter 5
I grabbed the memory card and headed down to Otis. He seemed pretty satisfied and said, “Hazel, you’re one hardworking gal. We’ve got a dinner party tonight. I’ll take you there so you can meet some folks. Networking is key for us reporters.”
I thanked him quickly, but my heart sank when I saw a familiar black Rolls–Royce in the parking lot. I froze. “Will Mr. Sinclair… be here too?”
Otis turned around and winked at me. “Yep, that’s exactly why I brought you. Hazel, never underestimate my connections.”
It was too late to back out now. I had to bite the bullet and follow Otis inside. Luckily, the place was huge. Newbies like me weren’t seated with Adrian and the others.
Otis introduced me to a bunch of impressive people from different industries. “This is our newbie this year, Hazel Walker. She’s a smart cookie. Hazel, go ahead and introduce yourself.” And as I greeted them, I had to sip my drink as a courtesy.
After a while, I started feeling a bit tipsy and dizzy. Just when I was about to apologize, I covered my mouth and rushed to the bathroom, almost puking my guts out.
I rinsed my mouth and splashed my face with water before stepping out. The corridor was dimly lit. And there, by the window, stood a familiar figure that made my heart skip a beal.
I wanted to act like I didn’t see him and just head back. But just as I took a step, Adrian spoke up from behind me.

His deep voice carried a mix of complicated emotions. “Hazel Walker.”
Hearing him call my name made me freeze in place. I swallowed nervously and instinctively closed my eyes.
He stopped right in front of me, and his familiar scent grew stronger.
I opened my eyes and found myself locked in his intense gaze.
“Mr. Sinclair.”
My throat was dry, and I was so nervous that my voice came out weak. “How do you know my name?”
He didn’t say a word. He just stared at me before standing up straight again.
“Your mentor practically introduced you to everyone in the room. It wasn’t hard to find out.”
Thinking of Otis‘ loud voice, I felt embarrassed and blushed slightly. “Sorry. He’s just really kind to us newbies, maybe a little too
enthusiastic. I apologize if it caused any disturbance,” I explained, trying hard to stay calm.
But Adrian fell silent once again. Under the warm yellow light, he narrowed his eyes slightly and gave me a faint smile.
“Ms. Walker, do I seem like a mean person to you?”
I lowered my head and spoke softly, “No, that’s not what I meant.”
The next moment, he handed me a fancy business card.
