Three more years passed. Ryan and I
graduated and returned home. I started my residency under a renowned medical
professor, while Ryan launched his own
company and helped the now–retired
principal manage the art gallery.
Life was busy, but fulfilling. I made time for
Ryan, and we were happy. Then, one day, two
unwelcome visitors shattered our peace.
David and my mother barged into my office,
hysterical. “Ashley, you have to save Lily!”
Lily’s vision had deteriorated to near-
blindness. Distraught, she had attempted
suicide several times, only to be stopped by
David.
Ashley, you re a doctor now! Your mentor is
so brilliant! You can cure her, right?”
My mother clung to me, sobbing. “If Lily dies, I don’t want to live anymore!”
The professor, after examining Lily, looked
grim. Her condition was extremely rare, with
few documented cases and no known cure.
