Chapter 5
Part 5
“Cheryl, drive to the hospital quickly. Jess has been in an accident.”
I cursed under my breath as I drove him to the hospital, just so my ex–husband could reunite with his “white moonlight.”
When I saw the so–called “seriously injured patient,” I couldn’t help but mutter, “What the hell.”
The little blood on Jessica‘ s forehead was less than what would come from swatting a mosquito.
Yet, Thomas was shedding tears for her.

had known him that I saw him cry.
It made me think back to last Valentine’s Day when, to keep me away while he met with the woman in front of me, he had lied, saying he had prepared a gift for me in an open field on the outskirts of town.
It was storming heavily that day, and on my way there, I got caught in a landslide and wa trapped in my car for three days and nights, barely escaping with my life.
When I was finally rescued, Thomas made only a token visit to the hospital, barely checking on me as I fought for my life.

vacation.
The sound of the nurse coming in to change my bandages snapped me out of my thoughts.
Jessica, fragile and delicate, was curled up in Thomas‘ s arms, smiling at me with a knowing look.
“Cheryl, Tommy must have been frantic on the way here. It’s all my fault, I’m always so careless crossing the street.”
Thomas, with a look of deep concern, gently ruffled her hair. “If anything happened to you, I wouldn’t be able to go on living.”
Staying there, watching them display their affection, was suffocating, so I stood up and left.
“Wait a minute.”
Thomas suddenly called out to me.

“Cheryl, go to the market right now and buy a top–quality black chicken, then make soup and bring it to us.”
Jessica chimed in with a smug expression, “Make sure to use less salt. I’m watching my sodium intake.”
I stopped in my tracks and the room fell into an uncomfortable silence.
Thomas‘ s voice rang out again,
unmistakably commanding.
“I’m letting you make the soup as a favor. Didn’t you used to love fussing around the kitchen with pots and pans?” Chapter 6
“You’re just sitting around anyway.”
