I sneered, “Sorry, my family arranged a blind date for me today, so I’m afraid I won’t be able to play the free babysitter for you guys.”
At eight in the evening, I arrived at the restaurant half an hour early, following Aunt Rena’s instructions.
The man who showed up for the date was quite handsome. After a bit of casual conversation, I learned that he was two years older than me and a college alumnus.
He had a refined demeanor and just by his mannerisms and speech, it was clear he had a calm and reserved temperament.
I genuinely admired him and had no other thoughts in mind. I simply didn’t want Aunt Rena’s kind intentions to go to waste.

Thomas, Aunt Rena initially blamed herself
and her daughter for holding me back. She believed that if it weren’t for them, people wouldn’t have looked down on me.
I told her the full truth about my broken marriage and the usually gentle and easily influenced woman could no longer accept it. She immediately promised to find me a man who was a thousand times better than
Thomas.
“Miss Zimmer, what do you think of me?”

Looking at the gentleman in front of me, I felt an inexplicable sense of admiration.
If we were to talk about looks, he was nothing like Thomas. The jerk certainly had a

This man, however, had a clear and refined appearance that made you want to get closer and discover what kind of perfect person lived within him.
More importantly, he lacked that innate arrogance and self–importance that Thomas carried and instead, there was an impulse to draw nearer, to get to know him better.
“Since you don’t dislike me, how about we give dating a try? I‘ ll always be mindful of your feelings and I promise to listen to you.”
I hesitated for a moment, when suddenly a deep male voice came from behind me.
“Cheryl, you better not agree to that!”
Thomas stormed over, placing himself between me and Clive.

“So you’ve already found someone new this quickly?”
Before I could say anything, Thomas swung his fist and landed a punch on Clive’s cheek.
“You‘ re crazy.”
I instinctively used all my strength to push him away and rushed forward to check on Clive’s injury.
“Are you really willing to stand up to me for him?”
Thomas’s waist hit a nearby shelf, making him gasp in pain.
“I really underestimated you. All these years, you’ve pretended to be gentle and virtuous, but deep down, you’ve been dying of loneliness, haven’t you? Tell me, when did you two start hooking up?”

I honestly didn’t care much, since his outbursts in public had become a regular occurrence by now.
But Clive, being an innocent bystander, had been hit for no reason and I couldn‘ thelp but feel guilty.
Soon, a crowd of onlookers had gathered to watch the drama unfold.
Thomas was great at stirring up trouble. “Everyone, come and judge for yourselves! My wife has been cheating on me behind my back and now she’s out here shamelessly shopping with her lover!”

His words were filthy and Clive didn’t hesitate. In two quick strides, he grabbed Thomas by the collar and, without a word, landed a punch straight to his face, knocking him to the ground.
Soon, a crowd of onlookers started speaking out against Clive and me.
“Is there no law anymore? This little home- wrecker has the audacity to fight back after being hit!”
“Ugh, you shameless couple. Don’t come out in public and dirty our eyes with your
behavior!”
