Love Like a Spark
Chapter 1
The night before my wedding, Chad’s adopted
sister, Brittany, was bawling at my feet.
“Lexi, I’m so sorry! I swear, I’ll never try to
steal Chad again. Can’t you stop those old
creeps from messing with me?”
Then, BAM! Right in front of everyone, she
throws herself in front of my car. Now she’s
in a coma.
Chad? He didn’t yell, didn’t blame me,
nothing.
He just went ahead and married me.
く
At the reception, Chad practically gave me to
some college dudes.
“A sinner like you needs to repent,” he
sneered.
“They’ll stop when you finally realize what you
did wrong.”
I tried to beg, but my mouth was taped shut.
All that came out were choked–up sobs.
Chad’s eyes were bloodshot. He pointed a
finger at me.
“You want it so bad, huh? These guys not
enough?”
The next time Chad saw me, my arms and
leas were broken
:
く
My pelvis was shattered, my insides were
hanging out. I was a total mess.
He leaned against the wall, smoking a
cigarette. “Lexi, do you admit you were
wrong?”
They rushed me to the hospital in the middle
of the night. At my own wedding, some
random guy took things way too far, and I
almost died from organ failure.
But I couldn’t really blame Chad, even though
his sister threw herself in front of my car.
I did put her in a coma, after all. I guess Chad
was just getting even.
୮
Chad walked past my room three times while
I was in the hospital, but never came in.
He just ignored me and went straight to the
room next door.
That’s where Brittany was lying.
I couldn’t help but follow him.
Unlike me, Brittany was surrounded by
people.
The doctor sighed.
“The patient is pregnant.”
That set everyone off.
<
Her family was in disbelief: “How can
someone in a coma get pregnant?”
But the doctor was sure.
“It’s rare, but she was already pregnant
before the accident, probably about six
months ago.”
Chad got super excited. “Doctor, that’s my
baby! It’s the most important thing Brittany
left me! Can she carry it to term safely?”
Hearing that, a cold wave washed over me.
Four months ago, Chad was planning our
wedding, picking out rings and dresses with
- me. We were so in love.
<
He spent every second of every day with me,
except for my birthday. He apologized and
said his sister’s period came and that he had
to run out to get her pads. He said that it was
an emergency and then he ran out in a panic.
Do the math, and that baby was conceived
that night.
So, he was telling the truth. He only married
me to try and stop thinking about Brittany.
Snapping back to reality, Chad’s parents were
arguing with him.
“A baby born from someone in a coma will be
disabled, or sick! We can’t let it be born!”
The doctor tried to reason with Chad. “Her
く
condition isn’t suitable for pregnancy. The
baby will most likely have severe birth
defects.”
But Chad refused to listen. He was
determined to keep the baby.
“So what if the baby has defects? It’s the
result of the love I have with Brittany! I’ll take
care of her and the baby no matter what.”
He went over to Brittany, beaming.
“Brittany, you’re pregnant! It’s our baby! Don’t
worry, I won’t let anyone take our baby away.”
Seeing how serious Chad was, his parents
reluctantly agreed.
I just stood there, watching it all, and walked
く
back to my room, tears silently streaming
down my face.
I gave up the chance to be recognized as an
officer of merit, and this is what I got in
return.
Chad finally came to me, but only because of
Brittany.
“I’m swamped at work, I can’t always take
care of Brittany. I don’t trust anyone else.
You’re going to be Brittany’s nurse.”
“This is your last chance to make up for what
you did. Don’t disappoint me again.”
He didn’t care about my injuries; he just
shoved me into Brittany’s room.
<
Then, he locked the door behind him.
Honestly, I would have done it anyway. I
needed to pay for what I had done.
Even though she was in a coma, she still
needed to be cleaned and taken care of. She
still had a body and all that comes with it.
Multiple times a day, I would help clean
Brittany up.
Sometimes, Chad would refuse to give me
gloves or protective gear.
When night came, he would send me away.
After a long, tiring day, I could see Chad
through the window, leaning over Brittany.
く
Chad kissed Brittany, reaching under her
gown.
My heart felt like it was being eaten alive, but
I had to swallow the pain and walk away.
On top of that, I found Chad’s diary.
It was filled with his secret love for Brittany.
“She’s five years younger than me. She’s so
little, but I want to hold her tight and break
her into pieces.”
“I know I’ve fallen for Brittany, but she’s so
innocent. She thinks her brother is pure, but I
have wicked thoughts about her. I want to
take her for myself.”
“That’s why I found Levi who recomk
Г
“That’s why I found Lexi, who resembles
Brittany so closely. She’s my way of clinging
to Brittany…”
Right then, Chad snatched the diary from me.
He yelled at me to get lost, but there was a
secretive excitement in his eyes.
I was overwhelmed.
I thought back to when Chad had started
hitting on me. I thought back to me always
asking him to marry me, but he always led me
to ask it.
Even though I hurt Brittany, Chad still married
me because he wanted me to be the
embodiment of his forbidden love.
<
Then I realized something even bigger.
Brittany might be faking the coma!
Every time I cleaned her, I could feel her
fingers twitching.
To prove it, I grabbed a pot of hot water I had
just finished heating.
I pretended to pour it on her face.
The steam was coming right to her face.
When she didn’t move, I raised an eyebrow
and threatened her.
“If you don’t wake up, this hot water might
just end up on your face. And if your pretty
face is ruined, do you think your brother will
く
still love you?”
That’s what worked. Brittany’s eyes shot
open, filled with hate.
I was about to say something when Chad burst in, grabbed the pot, and threw the water
on me.
