I submitted my resignation to the school.
A few years ago, I had to cut back on long–term research because of my eyes.
I stuck around because Antonio was busy with awards and evaluations, and he needed my help.
After his affair came to light, he started to mess with my research. No new funding was coming in for my projects
anymore.
I passed my unfinished projects and my students on to a trusted colleague, Flora.
She was shocked. “You’ve been working on this for half your life, and it’s already showing results. You’re giving it to me?”
I nodded with a smile.
She asked again, “The project is close to what Antonio is working on. Are you sure you’re not giving it to him?”
I sighed and shook my head. “He’s not worth it.”
Antonio once gave away my research results to Anna, and in the future, he might do the same with my students‘ work.
Flora didn’t say anything more but quietly helped me move my things.
I wasn’t going back to my old place but to that old house in

the school district.
It was just a temporary place for me to stay.

I packed up all my things over the years into boxes, thinking I’d leave something behind.
But after going through everything, I realized most of the stuff in the house was mine.
Antonio had hardly any clothes, and even the everyday items were about to expire.
I couldn’t remember when it had started, but he had long stopped coming home.
Or maybe he had another home outside, making this place nothing more than a hotel to him.
Who would keep their personal stuff in a hotel?
I called the real estate agent and sold the school district house that very day.
As for the few things Antonio left behind, I stacked them outside the door.
I told the neighbors that maybe a man in a suit would come to get them.
Or maybe not.
If he didn’t show up after two months, they could get rid of those things or sell them.
After cleaning up everything, I gave a lot of stuff I wasn’t taking with me to Flora.

Then I hopped on the plane back to my hometown, feeling light and free.
Before I left, Flora ran into the airport, out of breath.
She held up a gold necklace. “Grace, I found this in the package you sent. You’re leaving this behind too?
“You guys sold your jewelry to buy the house, and Antonio ate nothing but buns for three months to buy this necklace back.”
I sighed, “He got the wrong style when he bought it back. It wasn’t the same one.
“If you don’t like the old–fashioned design, melt it down and make something new.”
The original necklace was long gone, just like my feelings for Antonio.
They were both gone for good.
Sitting on the plane, I looked down at the bustling Dangarnon. Even though the school area looked small, I picked it out right away. That was where I spent twenty years.
Right now, Antonio should be lecturing his students.
He used to get so caught up in his research that he would forget he had class, and I’d have to remind him.
Even after all this time, I still remembered his schedule by heart, but it didn’t matter to me anymore.
However, I was wrong.
Antonio wasn’t in class.

After that mess in the lab, he asked the school for time off.
He didn’t know why he did it, but he kept thinking about the look in Grace’s eyes when she left.
It felt like a heavy weight on his heart.
Today was their wedding anniversary. Antonio had promised Grace he wouldn’t make her cry when they got married, but he broke that promise.
Lately, Grace had been crying a lot because of him.
After smoking three cigarettes, Antonio turned the car around and drove to their old house.
