Chapter 6
Antonio went to the courtyard and knocked on the door, but nobody answered for a long time.
At first, he thought Grace didn’t want to see him. But then the neighbors told him that she hadn’t been back for days.
That made sense. She was probably so upset with him that she went back to the old house in the school district.
Unlike other women, Grace didn’t have an old family home to go to. When she was angry, she could only stay in that old house and wait for Antonio to come and apologize.
Thinking of this, Antonio smiled, like he was back in the early days of their marriage when they had little fights but still had a lot of fun together.
On his way there, he bought some sunflowers.
Grace always loved sunny days.
Antonio remembered when he wasn’t so busy with research, he planted lots of sunflowers in the yard. On sunny days, Grace would read in a lounge chair.
Sometimes he’d lie on her lap and enjoy the flowers and coffee with her.
Antonio acted on impulse the other day.
Grace loved sunflowers more than anything, so she’d surely accept his apology.

He never thought Grace would sell the old house. He stood there, stunned, almost getting reported to the police as some weirdo.
Luckily, the neighbors recognized him and gave him the things Grace had left behind.
“Did you say Grace sold the house? Where is she?”
When the neighbors said they didn’t know, Antonio felt a sharp pain in his chest.
He got a bad feeling all of a sudden.
He jumped in his car and drove straight to the school. Grace might be gone, but she wouldn’t quit her job.
He had to find her and say sorry for what happened that day.
When Antonio got to the school, he saw that Grace’s desk was totally empty.
His heart started racing with panic. He ran to the door and saw a familiar hat. “Thank goodness! Grace, I knew you hadn’t left…”
But then he saw Flora’s face, and his words died in his throat.
Flora said Grace had given her a lot of her stuff.
Antonio felt a lump in his throat.
That hat was Grace’s favorite. It seemed like she was ready to say goodbye to the past.

Antonio tried to leave, but Flora stopped him. “Grace also gave me this necklace, but I don’t think I can keep it.”
Antonio stood there, shocked.
Flora then told him that Grace had quit her job and handed over her research and students.
“I don’t know what happened between you two, but Grace loves you so much. If it’s not something really bad, she’ll forgive you.”
Antonio felt cold all over. Something really bad?
He already did that.
“Did Grace say where she was going? I can’t reach her.”
Antonio smiled bitterly. A few days ago, he tried to message Grace but got blocked. He didn’t think much of it back then, figuring he’d find her and apologize in person.
But now she was gone, and he had no idea where to find her.
When he asked about Grace’s whereabouts, Flora shook her head.
With that, Antonio’s last bit of hope was gone.
