Chapter 5
I couldn’t quite wrap my head around why a minor fall warranted a hospital stay. But I was about to leave this place, and there was no use overthinking it. So I just nodded along to whatever Edward was saying.”
Around noon, Judy sent me a video. It was from a concert hall funded by the Reyes Corporation. On stage, Edward was playing his beloved cello, locked in an intense gaze with Judy.
The piece was Bach’s “Air on the G String,” a song he composed for his wife, symbolizing eternal love. As the final notes faded, the audience erupted in applause, along with whispers that filled the air:
“Isn’t that the Reyes family’s second son? Why’s he playing such a romantic piece for his sister–in–law?“>
“Well, his wife’s quite the scandal. Maybe he’s feeling trapped…“}
Before the video ended, my phone rang. Judy’s voice slithered through the speaker like some kind of sinister whisper. “Isabella, remember six months ago? Edward’s men tortured you for days, and we watched every second. Your screams were pathetic. During that time, I got pregnant with Edward’s child, with your cries as the soundtrack. It really got him going…“}
She laughed, a sound that sent shivers through me. I started shaking, then retching.}
“Isabella, you’ll always be beneath me!” Judy taunted before hanging up.”
Minutes later, Edward called. He sounded oddly chipper. “Isabella, I finished up early. Meet me at our usual spot. You’ve had a rough time lately. Let’s enjoy a nice meal together.”
I glanced at my plane ticket for a flight in a few hours, forcing a smile as I replied, “Sure, I have something for you.“>
After the call, Edward felt an unsettling tension. Maybe showing such obvious favoritism towards Judy and playing that piece was a mistake. Isabella’s unusually eager response on the phone wasn’t like her at all.
Realizing this, Edward hurriedly left the concert hall, instructed Tim to watch for Isabella at the restaurant, then raced there himself. The drive was unusually chaotic, plagued by traffic jams, but he finally pulled up to the restaurant. Just as he was about to get out, Tim dashed out, looking panicked.
Edward quickly rolled down the window. Tim, out of breath, tossed a couple of papers and a voice recorder into the car. “She’s gone. She heard everything we said outside the private room!“}
Edward’s eyes landed on the papers. The bold words “Divorce Agreement” stood out starkly against the white background…}
