Chapter 1 Marrying a Stranger

Outside the reception hall, Abigail stood frozen at the doors, her phone shaking in her hand.

She was supposed to walk down the aisle in minutes to marry the love of

life.

But just minutes ago, a text came through and turned her world upside down.

[Hey Abigail, guess who’s in bed with me right now? Your soon-to-be husband!]

It was from Caroline, her best friend and maid of honor.

At first, Abigail thought it had to be some sick joke.

No way would her fiancé and her best friend stab her in the back on her wedding day, right?

Then came the video that made her blood run cold.

There they were – Felix and Caroline – all over each other in bed.

Their moans filled her ears, each sound like a knife to her chest until she could barely breathe.

“Maybe… maybe this isn’t what it looks like?”

Prying a Stranger

Someone reached over and turned off her phone. Abigail hadn’t

even noticed she was crying until she saw tears falling on that hand.

“Listen, honey,” the makeup artist said gently, “these days people can fake anything with computers. And Felix adores you…”

Abigail psed, a flicker of hope igniting in her dull eyes.

“You’re right. Felix loves me. He chased after me forever, and when I finally said yes, he was so happy. He held my hands and swore he’d always take care of me. Why would he cheat on me today of all days? This has to be some mistake.”

Her fingers trembling, Abigail called Felix.

The phone kept ringing and ringing for what felt like forever before he answered.

Trying to keep it together, Abigail forced a calm voice. “Hey Felix, how’s everything going? I’m kind of nervous…”

“Look, Abigail, Caroline needs me. Wedding’s off. You’ll have to tell everyone,” he said flatly, his words hitting her like a slap in the face.

Abigail’s arm dropped, and she let out a harsh laugh.

So there it was.

On what should’ve been their wedding day, he was with another

woman, leaving her to deal with all those people whispering and pointing fingers at her.

After what felt like forever, Felix finally spoke up, his voice cold. “I’ll make this right when it’s over.”

“Make it right?” she shot back. “What’s your plan? Try to fix this mess of a marriage, or just throw cash at me to get lost? Save it.”

Abigail eup and called her dad.

She wanted to tell them the wedding was off.

But her dad spoke first, sounding guilty and worried. “Honey, Caroline’s sick. Mom and I probably can’t make it!”

Abigail’s heart dropped.

Of course. She wasn’t daddy’s little girl anymore.

Just three days back, when Caroline was trying on her bridesmaid dress, her parents spotted a birthmark on her back.

Turns out Caroline was the real Winchester daughter, and Abigail? Just some mix-up at the hospital.

“Who am I kidding? I’ve got no right to ask for their time.”

Looking at her dark phone screen, it hit her – first Felix stabbed her in the back, now her family was walking away too.

Everyone she counted on had picked Caroline, just like Felix did.

Abigail barely knew how she ended up inside the venue.

Looking out at all those happy faces in the crowd, she’d never felt more lonely.

Her chest felt like someone had ripped her heart out, leaving her struggling to breathe through the pain.

Nob was coming to save her. She was on her own.

But she wasn’t about to let those two get away with it.

Heart pounding, she balled her hands into fists.

Then she hiked up her dress, marched onto the stage, and grabbed the mic. “Sorry everyone, but the groom’s too busy sleeping with my maid of honor to show up! Anyone here want to get married today? Because I’m game!”

The room erupted into chaos.

“What happened? Did the groom run away?”

“Seems like it! Why else would the bride be asking for a new husband right now?”

“Even if he did, is it really necessary for her to find another man here? Everyone here knows the them; this is so awkward!”

Abigail knew her plan was nuts, but she was out of options.

In less than thirty minutes, this scandal would spread like wildfire through Claudia’s high society, and she was determined not to share in the humiliation. She wanted to hold onto

whatever dignity she had left.

But things didn’t go as she hoped.

As

m a few whispers, no one came forward.

The atmosphere grew tense and heavy.

Abigail stood alone in the middle of the hall, clutching her wedding dress.

It felt like the universe was playing a cruel joke on her; one minute, she was the darling of the Winchester family, and the next, she was plunged into despair, abandoned by the whole world.

Her smile was faltering as she wondered, “How long will I have to stay in this abyss?”

Suddenly, a tall guy stood up from the crowd.

“I’ll marry you,” he said with a deep, confident voice that felt like a breath of fresh air to Abigail. At that moment, nothing

could have sounded better.

The busy banquet hall went completely silent; everyone was shocked that someone actually stepped up to claim Abigail.

“Who is he?”

“No idea. I’ve never seen him before. He’s definitely not part of

Claudia’s elite circle.”

Today was supposed to bring the Winchester and Fitzgerald families together, an event for the social elite.

r this guy had an impressive background that kept him from them, or he was just a nobody who managed to sneak in to watch.

“He’s sitting with the groom’s guests. Must be a guest of the Fitzgerald family,” someone said, and the crowd buzzed with curiosity.

Abigail couldn’t help but admire him as he walked toward her, his presence grabbing everyone’s attention.

He was incredibly handsome, with a tall, athletic build.

She stood at 5’6″ in heels, yet he still towered over her.

As he got closer, Abigail felt a strong aura from him, a powerful energy that showed confidence and nobility.

“A guy like that… he doesn’t seem like someone who need to be looking for a wife. Maybe he has his own reasons for being single?”

Abigail thought about it but quickly shook it off. That wasn’t the point right now. Her main goal today was to get through the wedding and break free from the Winchester family.

Steadying herself, Abigail looked at him with a mix of doubt and hope. “Are you really serious about marrying me?”

She needed to be sure he wasn’t just messing around.

In the crowd, Marcus Fitzgerald met her eyes, looking calm and steady. “I don’t joke about serious stuff, and I definitely won’t take my marriage lightly.”

“And your name?” she asked.

“Marcus Fitzgerald.” His voice was smooth and deep, carrying a quiet authority.

The name made her pause. Her brow furrowed a bit. “Felix, is he related to you?”

“You could say I’m a distant uncle.”

“An uncle?” Abigail raised an eyebrow, sounding a bit skeptical.

“Distant uncle,” he clarified, putting a little emphasis on “distant.”

She gave a slight smile, feeling reassured by his explanation. “Distant” meant he wasn’t too involved, and that was fine by her. Still, she needed to double-check.

“You’re really sure you won’t regret this?”

“I don’t do regret.”

There was something about the quiet confidence in his voice th calmed her nerves. Abigail nodded, her voice a bit lighter now.

“Alright then. Let’s exchange rings.”

Without any fuss, she opened the ring box, took Marcus’s band, d slipped it onto his finger. Then she handed him her ring with a small nod, waiting for him to do the same.

The whole thing was quick and almost ridiculously simple, leaving the emcee speechless.

He’d overseen countless weddings, but this was completely different.

“What kind of madness is this? You can’t just treat a wedding like a business deal!”

“Has she lost her mind? Even if her fiancé bailed, this is way too

reckless!”

But Abigail ignored the whispers around her.

She turned to the guests with a faint smile, her voice steady and clear. “Thanks for being here today. I also want to announce that from now on, I have no ties to the Winchester family. Please enjoy the rest of the evening!”

Meanwhile, Felix’s parents were still on the way to the venue.

When their car finally arrived half an hour late, Felix’s mom,

Jane Fitzgerald, got out, already complaining.

“I said we shouldn’t come so early. If we don’t set her straight now, she’ll walk all over us once she’s in the family.”

She never liked Abigail and kept her distance from the wedding planning. Being late today was her way of reminding Abigail who was in charge.

But her plans unraveled as soon as they stepped into the banquet hall.

The guests quickly told them that Abigail had already left with another man. Felix’s parents realized Abigail had married some random guy instead of Felix!

Jane was furious. “That little tramp! She’s deliberately humiliating our family! I need to find out who this man is!”
