Chapter 7 The Reason He Wants to Get Married
She had only gone through the wedding ceremony with him as a temporary solution, a spur–of–the–moment decision to save face.
She had imagined they would take their time, see how things unfolded, before they could decide whether to start the relationship or not.
But it was clear that patience wasn’t part of his plan.
Sensing her hesitation, Marcus softened his voice. “We can talk
in the car.”
The curious glances from passersby made her skin crawl. She didn’t want to linger and draw more attention, so she slipped into the passenger seat.
As they drove away, Marcus glanced at her from the corner of his eye, noticing how she sat rigidly, her hands clenched into nervous fists on her lap.
“Why are you so reluctant to register the marriage?” he asked, his tone neutral, though his words felt like an accusation.
Abigail straightened, feeling her cheeks flush with heat.
“I’m not reluctant. I just didn’t expect it to happen so soon.”

Before he could respond, she hesitated, then blurted out, “Why are you in such a rush? Unless…”
Her eyes drifted downward, lingering on his legs, sharply dressed in tailored suit pants.
As handsome as he was, it seemed odd that he was still single unless there was some underlying issue.
Marcus met her scrutinizing gaze, and for a moment, his composure cracked.
His grip on the steering wheel faltered, and his foot nearly slammed the gas instead of the brake.
The car jolted suddenly, throwing Abigail forward against her seatbelt before snapping her back into place. Gasping, she clutched her chest and turned toward him.
Marcus‘ face had darkened noticeably, deepening Abigail’s
suspicions.
She stared at him thoughtfully, her mind wandering to the wild possibility that he might have some issues. Not that she’d mind if he did, actually. In fact, she might even prefer it. It’d spare. her from the awkwardness of sharing a bed with a complete
stranger.
Just as her thoughts were veering dangerously off–course, Marcus‘ voice cut in, cool and steady. “Open the glove
compartment.”

Abigail blinked, caught off guard. Still puzzled, she reached forward and did as he asked.
Inside was a neatly folded stack of papers.
“Take them out,” he said.
It was a medical report. He had apparently done a full–body checkup after arriving in Claudia, and the results were meticulous. Every test showed perfect health.
Abigail froze, her fingers brushing over the pristine document. She felt a twinge of disappointment.
As the car stopped at a red light, Marcus glanced over, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly.
“If you’re still not convinced, feel free to test it yourself.”

The words instantly conjured an image she desperately wanted to erase, and her face turned beet red.
She clapped her hands over her cheeks, stammering, “No, no, believe you!”
Her flustered reaction seemed to amuse him.
The tension in his shoulders eased, and a quiet laugh escaped his lips.
“For the record,” he began, his voice now gentler, “there’s
