Chapter 105 The Kid Might Not Make It
Natalia stood there frozen, watching James‘ car disappear into the distance. Her world spun as the reality of what just happened hit her like a truck. She broke into a run after the car, her voice cracking as she called out, “Honey… James!”
But it was too late–the car was already disappearing into the distance, even its taillights fading from view.
Natalia stomped her foot in frustration. Then, she heard Caroline’s agonized sobs. “Mom, help me… It hurts so bad. It hurts so much!”
Caroline could barely stand, clutching her stomach like she was about to collapse. Tears and cold sweat streamed down her face.
“Hey, don’t worry!” Natalia rushed to support her, fumbling for her phone with her free hand. “I’ll call someone to pick us up. I’ll…”
Her mind went totally blank–who could she even call right
now?
“Felix,” Caroline managed to whisper through chattering teeth. “Call Felix…”
She could barely get the words out through the pain, her fingers.

Natalia nodded frantically and pulled up Felix’s number. But the call didn’t even get through one ring before he hung up on her.
They tried calling from Caroline’s phone again, but he just kept hanging up.
Caroline was on the verge of passing out from the pain.
Left with no other choice, Natalia finally dialed 911.
Now, they were at the hospital’s OB–GYN department. Caroline had been wheeled in for examination while Natalia paced anxiously in the hallway, wearing a path on the floor.
After what felt like forever, the exam room door finally opened, and a female doctor in her forties stepped out.
“Are you here for the patient?”
Natalia rushed over, her words tumbling out in a worried rush. “Yes, yes–doctor, how are my daughter and the baby? Are they okay?”
“Your daughter’s going to be okay. She’s just physically drained. Nothing some rest won’t fix. But as for the baby…” The doctor”
paused, clearly hesitating about what came next.
Natalia’s heart clenched. “What about the baby?”
Had they lost it?

Instead of answering directly, the doctor asked, “Where’s your daughter’s husband? This is something we should probably discuss with him.”
Natalia’s face hardened as she thought about the two calls Felix had ignored. “He’s busy,” she said firmly. “You can tell me everything. I can make the decisions.”
Seeing her determination, the doctor didn’t push it. “The test results show a high risk for Trisomy 21 in the fetus. Down syndrome, in everyday terms. The hospital’s recommendation is to terminate the pregnancy.”
Natalia’s vision blurred as she staggered backward, barely catching herself against the wall to stay upright.
The doctor adjusted his grip on her arm and let out a heavy sigh. “Look, your daughter’s still young,” he said, giving her shoulder a gentle pat. “There’s no need to risk having a child who might be born with cognitive disabilities. You both should really think this through.”
Natalia could only nod numbly, her eyes completely vacant.
After the doctor left, she sat on one of those cold metal chairs in the hospital hallway for what felt like forever. It wasn’t until a nurse came to tell her Caroline was awake that she finally dragged herself to the room.
The moment she walked in, Caroline tried to reach for her hand, her voice thick with worry. “Mom, is my baby okay?”

“Hey, don’t move,” Natalia stepped forward, easing Caroline back against the pillows. She carefully dodged the question hanging in the air between them.

Caroline’s heart dropped into her stomach. “Mom…” Her voice came out shaky and small.
Natalia pressed her lips together before dropping the bomb. “Caroline, sweetie… Maybe we should… terminate the
pregnancy.”
“What? Mom, how can you even say that? This is my baby, mine and Felix’s!” Caroline burst out, her emotions hitting the roof.
The thought of losing this baby… She couldn’t even go there.
Natalia steeled herself, knowing she had to be cruel. “But Felix clearly doesn’t give a damn about this baby! And the doctor said there’s a high risk of Down syndrome. The baby might be…” she struggled with the words, “…mentally disabled.”
“Caroline, please listen to me. Let’s not go through with this. You’re already so weak–there’s no point risking your health just to bring this baby into the world.”
Caroline stared blankly at the sterile hospital ceiling, tears blurring her vision as she lay there, completely numb.
Why did all the bad stuff have to happen to her? Why was she always the one getting dealt the worst cards?

“Caroline, honey, don’t be sad,” Natalia whispered, wrapping

her arms around her daughter. “You’re still young. You can have more children later.”
Caroline stayed quiet for what felt like forever, frozen like a statue. When she finally spoke, her voice was steady. “Mom, I’m keeping the baby.”
So what if there was a high risk of Down syndrome? Caroline was willing to roll the dice.
“Are you out of your mind?” Natalia’s eyes went wide with shock.
“I’m not crazy!” Caroline shot back. “I know exactly what I’m doing!”
Her fingers gripped the metal bed rail until her knuckles went white.
She was going to have this baby, complications and all. And nobody was going to change her mind.
It wasn’t that she particularly loved kids. Caroline just knew a baby was her only real leverage over Felix.
If she hadn’t gotten pregnant, Felix would’ve kicked her to the curb ages ago.
Tonight’s Envision Group party had given her a front–row seat to how these high society types really operated.

Right then and there, Caroline made up her mind. She was going to claw her way to the top of Claudia’s social ladder, no matter
what.
One day, all these people looking down their noses at her would be on their knees begging for forgiveness.
Caroline was going to make every single person who tried to stomp her down eat their words!
So, maybe it wasn’t pretty, but she’d do whatever it took to lock Felix down.
Natalia had no clue what was going through Caroline’s head as she kept trying to talk some sense into her. “Caroline, having a baby isn’t just some game. You’re signing up to be responsible for an entire life. Can you please not rush into this?”
Caroline pressed her lips together.
She didn’t want Natalia to see through her schemes and ambitions. Placing a gentle hand over her stomach, she spoke softly, “Mom, please stop. I’ve made up my mind. Now that this baby’s here, I can’t just give up on them.
“No matter how hard it will be, I’ll get through them together with my baby. Plus, medicine is so advanced these days. Even if there are complications after birth, I’m sure they can be treated.”
