Chapter 106 No More Emotional Attachments
Sure, Natalia and Caroline were mother and daughter by blood, but they hadn’t exactly had much time to build a real relationship.
She didn’t dare push Caroline too hard about terminating the
pregnancy.
Left with no other choice, she could only sigh and say, “Well, if you’re sure about this, just don’t come crying to me later when. things get tough.”
“Get some rest, and don’t go anywhere for the next couple of days,” she told Caroline in a low voice, adjusting her blanket. “Just focus on taking care of the baby. I’ll go handle the hospital bills.”
Caroline nodded obediently, playing the perfect patient.
But the second Natalia walked out. She was already dialing Felix’s mom. “Jane? Hi, it’s Caroline.”
The moment Jane heard that voice, her face darkened. “Why are you calling me?” she snapped.
Her blood pressure shot up just thinking about it all–the company’s stock taking a nosedive, plus that scandalous story

And it was all Caroline’s fault!

Everything had gone downhill since Felix got involved with this
Woman.
“She must be bad luck or something,” Jane thought bitterly. “Like one of those black widow types who ruins every man she touches.”
Jane’s voice dripped with venom as she spat out, “You
shameless homewrecker! You’ve already ruined our family! Can’t you pick a better time and place to seduce men? Just stay away from Felix!”
It was crystal clear that Jane didn’t see any fault in Felix’s actions. She was dumping all the blame squarely on Caroline’s shoulders.
Caroline’s face remained perfectly blank as she dropped her bombshell. “Mrs. Jane Fitzgerald, I’m pregnant.”
Jane froze mid–rant, but Caroline wasn’t done yet. “And Felix is the father.”

It was Abigail’s first night sleeping alone since getting married. She couldn’t stop tossing and turning.

One look in the mirror the next morning at those massive dark circles under her eyes, and she let out the deepest sigh ever.
Even though they’d been married less than two weeks, his influence had already seeped into every corner of her life.
She caught herself waking up each morning expecting to catch that familiar whiff of breakfast cooking, just like before.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed on the vanity.
Abigail picked it up for a quick check. It was a text from Marcus. “Made it safe. Don’t worry about me.”
He must’ve landed last night but waited until morning to text, probably not wanting to mess with her sleep.
Abigail stared at the message for a moment, but couldn’t bring herself to reply. What was she even supposed to say?
The whole Marcus–lying–to–her thing still gnawed at her insides, refusing to let go.
Abigail was scared, straight up terrified that Marcus would end up being another Felix–just another guy who’d leave her heart in pieces.
The thought of diving back into the whole love thing only to get completely wrecked again was enough to make her want to run for the hills.
With Marcus back in Veridon, this was her chance to get her

head straight and figure out if she really wanted to keep this thing going.

After doing her makeup, Abigail skipped breakfast and booked it to the office.
After last night’s drama at the anniversary party, she’d braced herself for Caroline to bring the heat at work.
a
But the weird thing was, she’d been grinding away all morning and hadn’t seen even a shadow of drama.
Abigail twirled her pen, curiosity getting the better of her.
What was up with that? Had Caroline actually grown up overnight or something?
Even though things had quieted down, Abigail couldn’t shake this nagging feeling that something was off.
Worried that Caroline might be cooking up some nasty surprise, Abigail quickly called Olivia in to get the scoop. “Have you seen Caroline today?”
“Ms. Winchester, you haven’t heard?” Olivia’s eyes went wide.
“Heard what?” Abigail was totally lost.
Olivia’s eyes lit up like she was about to spill the hottest tea ever. Leaning in close, she whispered excitedly, “Last night, Mr. Winchester, his wife, and Caroline got kicked out of the anniversary party! Apparently, their invitations were fake!

Olivia couldn’t quite hide the smirk playing on her face as she shared the gossip.
When she heard about James slapping Caroline, Abigail didn’t even flinch.
She knew James like the back of her hand. Even his own flesh and blood was disposable once they stopped being useful.
That was exactly why Abigal had been walking on eggshells all these years.
One slip–up, one moment of letting her guard down, and James would chew Natalia up and spit her out without a second thought.
But Natalia just didn’t get it. She actually thought Abigail was being difficult with James on purpose, like some rebellious teenager acting out.
Everything changed the moment Natalia knowingly sided with Caroline, even after catching her sneaking around with Felix.
That was it–the last thread of their mother–daughter bond just snapped.
From now on, Abigail was done getting emotionally invested in

the Winchester family.
