Chapter 110 Getting a Divorce
“Why would you say all of this is Caroline’s fault?” Abigail asked, her brows furrowing as she stared intently at Troy.
Troy sighed, slipping into a sad recollection, “It happened tent years ago. Abigail, don’t be fooled by how timid Eddie seems and easy to push around he is now. Back then, he was nothing like this. He was strong, smart, and exceptionally sharp. He always excelled in his studies, ranking top in every exam.
“Everyone thought Eddie was destined to get into Claudia’s best university and lead our family to a better life. We had such high hopes for him, and he never let us down. His grades kept improving–until that one night before the SAT.”
Troy’s expression darkened as he continued, “That evening, Caroline had this sudden idea. She begged Ryan to take her to the nearby hill, claiming she wanted to catch fireflies to make a wish for his success. Ryan didn’t believe in those things, but he didn’t want to disappoint her, so he took her anyway.
“On the way there, Caroline let go of Eddie’s hand and ran across the road. A car nearly hit her. Eddie rushed to save her and got hit instead. His leg was badly injured, and he fell into a coma for two days, missing his exams entirely.
“When Eddie woke up and realized he couldn’t walk properly anymore, he was crushed. He gave up on himself, blaming fate. Mom and Dad urged him to take another year and try again, but

the accident left us penniless.

“The driver who hit Eddie fled, and we got no compensation. All our savings went toward Eddie’s treatment. Eddie felt guilty about the burden he’d placed on our parents. He refused to
retake the exams or continue school, saying it wasn’t worth the cost. A future that once shone so brightly was snuffed out by that single accident.
“Mom took it the hardest. She couldn’t handle the stress and fell ill. Her health kept declining, but we couldn’t afford proper treatment. Over time, her minor illnesses turned into something. much worse.”
Abigail’s fists clenched tightly by her sides as she listened,
her chest tightening with anger. She thought, “So much had happened before I came into their lives. Caroline dares to mock the Yannis family for being poor. She constantly compared them to others but felt no shame, no guilt for what she’d caused?”
Troy’s face was filled with resentment. “Mom and Dad never let us talk about it in front of Caroline. They were afraid she’d feel guilty. Even Eddie, who bore the brunt of it, convinced himself it was his fault. He never wanted Caroline to feel any pressure.
“But I don’t think Caroline ever cared about what happened. If she did, she wouldn’t have repaid us like this. After finding out she was born into a wealthy family, she broke ties with us like we were nothing. She even caused a scene at the hospital, knowing full well Mom’s condition couldn’t handle stress.”
Abigail thought, “If Caroline had even a shred of conscience, she

wouldn’t have abandoned them so cruelly. It’s like she’s afraid. they’ll cling to her and bleed her dry.” Hearing this, Abigail felt a wave of disgust for Caroline. For the first time, she genuinely loathed her.
“Now you understand why Eddie’s locked himself away, right?” Troy said firmly. “He just needs time to process all this. But trust me, Abigail, if you spend more time with him, he’ll realize you’re a million times better than Caroline ever was.
Just then, Adela emerged from the kitchen with a plate of freshly sliced fruit. She caught the tail end of the conversation. and chimed in, “That’s right, Abigail. Eddie knows right from wrong. He won’t hold any of this against you.” Their reassurance eased Abigail’s worries a bit.
Dinner was ready an hour later, with Adela and William serving a table full of delicious dishes. But Eddie still didn’t come out,
claiming he wasn’t hungry.
Adela and William, understanding his pain, didn’t force him. Instead, they showered Abigail with comfort, worried she’d feel out of place. Surprisingly, it was Abigail who ended up consoling them. The meal was a warm and lively affair, even without
Eddie.
After dinner, Troy volunteered to do the dishes, leaving Abigail with Adela and William in the living room. They snacked on chips and fruit while watching TV.
As they sat together, Abigail suddenly felt a pair of eyes on her. She looked up to find William watching her with an expression

that was both hesitant and thoughtful. “Dad… is something on your mind?” Abigail asked curiously.
Her question seemed to take him off guard, but after a moment, William took a deep breath. The way he looked at Abigail softened, his eyes glistening slightly. “Abigail,” he said, his voice trembling a bit, “since you’ve started calling me ‘Dad‘, it means you see us as family, right? There’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you.”
“Of course you can ask me,” Abigail answered sincerely.
“Have you ever thought about getting a divorce?” William said cautiously, his gaze steady now.
