Chapter 36
Chapter 36
ROSALIE
I swallowed the lump rising in my throat, the burn of humiliation sharp and bitter. Forcing my legs to move, I crossed the room to a quiet corner near the edge of the room. The music was loud enough to drown out my thoughts if I focused on it. but the sight of Damien and Melanie lingered, an image burned into my mind that refused to leave.
1 sank into a chair, my hands clenching the fabric of my gown as I watched the crowd move around me. Guests floated by. their laughter and idle chatter like a dull buzz in the background. Some glanced my way, curiosity flickering in their eyes, but no one approached.
Good. I didn’t want to talk to anyone. I wanted to be invisible, to disappear into the shadows and escape the crushing weight of this evening. But even as I tried to look away, my gaze kept drifting back to Damien.
He was still with her, of course. She leaned in close, her lips moving near his ear as she whispered something. Whatever it was, it made him smile–a genuine, soft smile I hadn’t seen from him.
My stomach twisted at the sight
Why does this bother me so much? I wondered bitterly. I shouldn’t care. After everything he’d done–locking me away, treating me like some disposable pawn–I shouldn’t feel anything but anger. And yet, the feeling burned hotter than the fury, cutting deeper than I wanted to admit.
My fingers tightened around the armrest of the chair as I glared at him from across the room. I wanted to march over there. to grab him by the lapels of his perfectly tailored suit and demand to know what the hell he thought he was doing. But I didn’t. I stayed rooted in place, my pride keeping me from making a scene.
As if sensing my gaze, Damien suddenly turned. His eyes locked with mine, the sharpness in them making my breath catch. For a moment, the room seemed to blur, the noise fading into the background as we stared at each other.
I didn’t look away. If he wanted a reaction, he’d get one. I let every ounce of anger I felt burn in my glare, silently daring him to come over and explain himself.
But instead of looking chastised–or even guilty–he smirked. That infuriating, arrogant smirk that made my blood boil.
I narrowed my eyes, my lips pressing into a thin line. He thinks this is funny?
Suddenly, Melanie leaned in again, her lips close to his ear as she whispered something I couldn’t hear. Damien’s smirk widened slightly before he nodded. And then, as if I wasn’t even there, he placed his hand on her back and guided her away.
They disappeared into the crowd, leaving me sitting there, humiliated and seething
My chest tightened, and I struggled to breathe through the storm of emotions swirling inside me. Anger, jealousy, frustration–they all mixed together, choking me. My eyes burned, and I blinked rapidly, refusing to let tears fall. Not here.
Not now.
Why does this hurt so much? The question echoed in my mind, cruel and relentless. I didn’t want to care. I didn’t want to feel this twisting ache in any chest, this overwhelming sense of being pushed aside, forgotten
My hands trembled as I pushed myself to my feet, the sudden movement making the edges of my vision blur. I couldn’t stay here, couldn’t watch him parade around with her while I sat in the corner like some discarded ornament
1 didn’t care what he would say later. I didn’t care about the consequences. I just needed to get out of this room, away from the noise, the people, and him.

Chapter 36
The air felt suffocating as I wove through the crowd, my footsteps quick and unsteady
The moment I turned to head for the exit, desperate to escape the suffocating attunghiere of the men, humped int
someone.
atmospher
“Oh!” I exclaimed, startled.
“Rosalie,” a familiar voice said, smooth and composed.
1 froze. My eyes darted upward, locking with Charlotte’s. My sister stood before me, her lips curling into a small smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. She was dressed impeccably, as always, in a sleek crimson dress that hugged her frame, elegance and confidence.
“Charlotte?” My voice came out as a whisper, disbelief lacing my tone. “What are you doing here?
She raised a brow, tilting her head slightly. “It’s a business function, Rosalie Father’s company was invited. I’m here to represent him, of course.”
My stomach twisted at her casual tone, and I couldn’t help but feel the sting of her words. “Father didn’t come by himself?”
Charlotte’s smile widened, her gaze cool and calculating. “Well, he wouldn’t, would he? Not after everything that happened between him and Damien.
The mention of that incident–the moment Damien hit my father–made my chest tighten. I nodded slowly, not wanting to dwell on it. “I see.””
Charlotte took a small step closer, her expression softening, though I knew better than to trust it completely. “And howe you holding up?” she asked, her voice dripping with concern. “It must be difficult, being here tonight”
I hesitated, unsure of whether to confide in her. But her sympathetic tone broke through my defenses. “It’s been rough.” admitted, my
voice barely above a whisper. “Especially after I confronted him about what he did to Father.”
Нет eyes flickered with something–satisfaction, maybe?-but it was gone so quickly I almost doubted I’d seen it “I can imagine,” she said softly. “Damien has always been… intense. Where is he anyway?
I glanced away, the weight of everything pressing down on me. “How will I know? He’s been ignoring me all evening.” I
added, the words tumbling out before I could stop them. “The last time I saw him, he was chatting with a woman Practically flaunting her in my face.”
Charlotte stiffened at that, her expression faltering for a split second. “A woman?“
“Yes,” I said, frowning at her reaction. “What’s the matter?”
She quickly composed herself, shaking her head with a small laugh. “Oh, it’s nothing,” she said, waving a hand dismissively “I’m just… worried about you, that’s all. Who is this woman?”
I shrugged, the bitterness creeping into my voice. “She apparently works with Damien. Her name is Melanie. She’s high- class, elegant. the kind of woman who seems to fit right into his world”
Charlotte’s lips curled into a sly smile, her eyes gleaming “Well, perhaps if you polished yourself up a bit more, you’d fir into his world, too. You know, looked as sophisticated as she does. And he’d take you as his date as well.”
Her words hit like a slap, and I felt the heat rise to my cheeks. “I don’t need to look like her,” I snapped. “And she is not his date. Damien’s just being petty. Flirting with her to make me jealous”
Charlotte’s smirk deepened, her gaze almost pitying “Oh, Rosale,” she said with a sigh “Is that what you really think?”

Chapter 36
“Yes,” I said firmly, though the seed of doubt her tone planted was already beginning to take root.

She leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “What if it’s not just flirting? What if it’s more than that? What if this woman is someone he.. truly cares for? Someone he’s kept hidden–his secret, perhaps?”
The words hit me like a punch to the gut, and I felt the air leave my lungs. “That’s ridiculous,” I said, though my wavered. “Damien wouldn’t-”
voice
“Wouldn’t he?” she cut in smoothly, raising a brow. “Think about it, Rosalie. How often does he truly make you feel like you’re the most important person in his life? If this woman is as elegant and high–class as you say… maybe she’s what he really wants.”
I stared at her, my chest tightening painfully. “Why would you say something like that?”
Charlotte’s expression softened, her smile turning almost gentle. “I’m just looking out for you, Rosalie,” she said quietly. “If you want to keep your place in this marriage, maybe it’s time to stop being so… plain. Try to match his world. Become the kind of woman he’d never want to replace.”
Her words echoed in my mind, each one cutting deeper than the last. I opened my mouth to respond, but no words came
out.
Charlotte gave
gave me a final once–over, her expression a mixture of pity and amusement. Think about it,” she said lightly. before turning and walking away, her crimson dress swaying with each step.
I stood there, frozen, the weight of her words pressing down on me like a boulder. My chest felt tight, my breathing shallow, The doubts she’d planted began to bloom, each one more painful than the last.
Was she right? Had I been deluding myself into thinking Damien’s actions were nothing more than petty games?
The thought was too overwhelming, too suffocating to bear. Without thinking. I turned and made my way toward the exit, the noise of the party fading into the background. I couldn’t stay here–not with these doubts, not with these feelings clawing at my chest.
The cool night air hit my face as I stepped outside, but it did little to soothe the storm raging within me.
Where is Damien!?
