MELANIE
I sat in my car, gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white. The anger simmering inside me was nothing new–it was familiar, almost comforting. But today, it burned hotter. Today, it was personal.

Damien. Always so cold, always so distant when it came to me. No matter what I did, no matter how many times I reminded him of what we could have, he pushed me away like I was nothing. Like I wasn’t worth a second thought
And Rosalie. That pathetic little girl who somehow had him wrapped around her finger. She didn’t deserve him. She didn’t deserve anything. Damien was supposed to be mine, Mine.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm the rage bubbling inside me, but it was useless. The more I thought about it, the more it made my blood boil.
And then there was Charlotte. That arrogant, insufferable woman who had the audacity to stand in my way. She thought she could tell me to stay away from Damien? Who did she think she was?
I scoffed, shaking my head. That day we bumped into each other replayed in my mind like a bitter memory stuck on repeat. Charlotte had looked at me with that smug superiority, like she was so much better, like she had some kind of authority over
She thought she could warn me off.
She thought she could threaten me.
She was wrong-
That’s why I’d made sure to teach her a lesson. She had no idea what I was capable of. No idea just how deep I could bury my claws into the game.
I leaned back against my seat, my fingers tapping against the leather.
I was the one who took that picture of her. The one of Charlotte recording Damien. She thought she was so sneaky, hiding in the shadows, collecting her little secrets. But I had seen her. I had caught her red–handed
And I made sure she knew it
She thought she was hunting Damien? Watching his every move? Well, someone had been watching her too. And now, I was going to make sure she paid for the way she spoke to me that day.
Charlotte thought she was untouchable. That she was the smartest woman in the room. She was sly, yes. But she wasn’t the tandy one
I smirked, dunking about what I had done
It had been a last–minute decision, but a brilliant
→ mistake by wearing that ring to the abandoned warehouse that night. A stupid, reckless mistake. I had been carries and aureone like Charlotte? She didn’t let mustakes slide
1 had to fix it quickly.
So I did what I do beat I improvised
I’d gone to Damien’s Iran’s

A poor, desperate thing who looked like she would do anything for a little extra cash.

1 introduced myself with a fake name–something simple, something forgettable. Then, I’d smiled, all sweet and innocent, as I pulled the ring from my finger.
“This is for you.” Tid said, holding it out to her.
The girl had looked confused at first. Suspicious. “Why?”
I’d laughed, brushing off the question like it didn’t matter. “Because I feel like doing a good deed today.”
She still hesitated, so I sweetened the deal. “Wear it for a little while, humor me,” I’d said, my voice light, playful. “I’ll even throw in a thousand dollars, just for you.”
That had done the trick
Her eyes widened. A thousand dollars for simply wearing a ring? It was an easy yes.
She took it. Slipped it onto her finger.
And just like that, Charlotte had a new little mystery to chase.
I chuckled to myself, my fingers still drumming against the steering wheel.
Charlotte was sharp, no doubt. She’d realize the ring wasn’t just some coincidence. She’d start digging, start searching, trying to piece together the puzzle.
And that was exactly what I wanted.
While she wasted her time chasing a false lead, I would be busy with something far more important.
Destroying Rosalie
She was the real problem. The real obstacle.
Damien loved her–at least, that’s what he thought. But love was fragile. It could be twisted, broken, shattered beyond repair.
And I was going to do just that
I would break them
One way or another I would make sure Rosalie was out of Damien’s life for good.
And as for Charlotte!
She would be too busy running in circles to stop me
as
I smiled myself, a slow, satisfied smile as I reached for the ignition.
Let the games begin
Then, with one last glance at Damien’s building in my rearview mirror, I drove away. 2

She pulled off her gloves, dropping them into a basket filled with used ones, then reached for the rug she had draped over her shoulder. Her hands were dry and rough from hours of scrubbing, the faint scent of bleach still clinging to her fingertips.
Across the room. Nora, one of the older maids, was stacking some cleaning supplies on a shelf. She glanced over at Rita with a tired smile. “You done for the day?”
Rita nodded, rolling her sore shoulders. “Yeah. Finally”
Nora chuckled, closing the cabinet. “First day on the evening shift, huh? You’ll get used to it. This place never runs out of mnesses to clean”
Rita sighed, slumping onto the bench by the lockers. “I don’t get how people can be so careless. I found gum stuck under one of the boardroom chairs today. Who even does that?”
Nora snorted. “Rich people. They don’t think about who cleans up after them.”
Rita shook her head, pulling her phone out of her pocket as she prepared to check the time. She was supposed to catch the 8.30 bus, and if she hurried, she might just make it.
Her stomach growled, reminding her she hadn’t eaten since noon. Maybe she’d stop by the little food stall near the station- if she had enough cash left over.
She was about to stand when her phone vibrated.
A message
She frowned and swiped at the screen.
Unknown Number: Watch your back. I’m coming for you.
Her blood ran cold.
The air in the room suddenly felt heavier. The words on the screen blurred slightly as her fingers trembled.
“What’s wrong“” Nora asked, stuffing her gloves into her locker.
Rita swallowed, locking her phone. “Nothing Just–just tired.”
Shr didn’t know why she lied. Maybe because saying it out loud would make it feel more real. Maybe because she didn’t want Nora to think she was overreacting
Nora stretched, groaning slightly. “Yeah, same. Well, I’m heading out. You coming?
Kita besitated before shaking her head. “I’ll be right behind you. Just need to grab something
Nota gave a small wave. “Alright. Night, Kita”
“Night” abe murmured watching the older woman walk out of the room.
As soon as the door clicked shout, Rita let out a slow breath and unlocked her phone again.
She read the message once mate
it wasn’t a joke i did feel like a prank
Her mind raced. Who would send something like this!

She wasn’t important enough to have enemies, she was a cleaner. She kept her head down, did her job, and went home. She didn’t get involved in drama. She had nothing to do with the powerful people in this building-
She glanced around the pathway as if expecting someone to jump out of the shadows. But of course, she was alone. The other cleaners had left already, and the hallway outside was silent.
Was the text a prank? Maybe.
But something about it felt… wrong.
Her throat went dry as she hesitated, staring at the screen. Should she reply? Ask who it was? No. That was stupid. If someone was playing games with her, she wasn’t about to feed into it.
Her thumb hovered over the delete button, but she couldn’t bring herself to press it.
Instead, she locked the phone and stuffed it into her bag, trying to shake the uneasy feeling creeping over her.
It’s nothing, she told herself. Probably just some dumb joke.
Still, as she stepped out into the dimly lit hallway, she couldn’t ignore the way her pulse quickened.
And for the first time since she started working here, she felt like someone was watching her.
