ROSALIE
I sat by the window, a ball of sofi yarn resting in my lap as my fingers moved methodically, looping the delicate threads into neat, even stitches, Knitting had become my quiet escape–a way to keep my hands busy when my mind wouldn’t stop. running in circles. The rhythmic movement was supposed to be soothing, but tonight, it did nothing to quiet the thoughts buzzing in my head.
The house was silent. Not the peaceful kind of silence, but the hollow, heavy kind. The kind that pressed in on me, the rooms feel bigger, emptier.
Damien wasn’t home vet.
I glanced at the clock on the wall. 7:46 PM. Not that late. But late enough.
making
I let out a slow sigh and focused back on my work, looping another stitch into place. It was a simple pattern–something t could do without thinking–but tonight, even that felt like a chore. My hands moved on their own, but my mind was elsewhere.
This wasn’t how things were supposed to be.
In the beginning, I used to wait up for him, pretending it was casual, like I wasn’t keeping track of the time. I’d sit on the couch with a book I never really read, or curl up in bed with the lamp still on, telling myself I’d close my eyes after just a few more minutes. But those minutes would stretch into hours, and eventually, I stopped waiting.
Or at least. I told myself I did.
But the truth was, I still noticed. I still listened for the sound of the front door, for the heavy steps that never came. I still found myself wondering where he was, what he was doing. If he was thinking about me at all.
I pulled the yarn a little too tight, making my next stitch uneven.
Maybe that was the problem.
Maybe I cared too much.
I let out another breath and tried to relax my grip. I wasn’t going to be that woman–the one who spent her nights staring at the clock, waiting for a man who had clearly stopped waiting for her. If Damien wanted to spend his nights elsewhere, that was his choice. I wasn’t going to beg for his attention.
But then why did it still hurt?
I glanced down at my project, my fingers slowing. The scarf I’d been working on for weeks was almost finished. I had started at absentmindedly one evening, telling myself it was just to pass the time, but I knew the truth,
It was for him.
I had chosen the deep navy–blur yarn because I knew it would suit him. Because I could picture him wearing it on a cold morning the soft material wrapped around his neck. Because even when things were falling apart, some part of me still
ated to hold onto him, in the smallest of ways.
Pathetic
I set the knitting needles down on my lap rubbing my hands together
I hated this feeling. This ache in my chest that refused to go away

A soft knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts.
I turned my head just as Maria, stepped inside, her expression hesitant.
“Madam.” she said carefully. “Mrs. Hale, Damien’s mother, is here to see you.”
I stiffened. Damien’s mother.
Of course, she would come unannounced.

I gripped the armrest of my chair, my mind already racing. What could she possibly want tonight? It wasn’t as if she ever visited for a pleasant chat. No, my last encounter with her was a battle, one I didn’t win.
“She’s in the sitting room,” Maria added. “Should I tell her you’re unavailable?”
I considered it. I really did. Just staying up here, pretending I wasn’t home, letting Maria handle it. But that would only give her more ammunition–more reason to paint me as disrespectful, unworthy.
I inhaled slowly, forcing my irritation down. “No, it’s fine. I’ll be down in a moment.”
Maria nodded and left, and I took a second to
I myself
I already knew how this would go. This visit was not just for the sake of it. There was always a reason, always a lecture, always something I was doing wrong.
As I made my way down the stairs, I spotted her immediately. Sitting on the couch, her posture as poised and regal as ever, a woman who carried herself like she ruled the world. Her hands were folded neatly in her lap, her expression unreadable, but her sharp gaze gave her away.
She was here with a purpose.
I wore on a polite smile and approached. “Mother,” I greeted, keeping my voice light. “I wasn’t expecting you tonight. If I had known, I would have prepared something special for
you.”
She raised an eyebrow, her lips curving into a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Oh? And is it now a crime for me to visit my son’s house without informing you first?”
I sighed inwardly. Here we go.
“That’s not what I meant,” I said carefully. “I only meant that I would have liked to be better prepared.”
She scoffed “No need to pretend, Rosalic. I can see that my presence is an inconvenience to you.”
I ignored the bait and forced another smile. “Would you like something to eat? Or maybe some tea?”
“Juior will do” she said coolly. “And perhaps a pastry”
I nodded, signaling Maria, who quickly returned with the refreshments.
She took a small sip of her drink before setting the glass down and looking directly at me. “How is your marriage?”
The question was a trap I knew it the moment she asked it
I swallowed. “It’s for
Her eyes darkened, and then-

Her voice was sharp, cuting through the air like a blade.
I tensed.

“You sit here, pretending everything is fine when it is clear to everyone that your marriage is falling apart,” she snapped. “You are ruining this family’s name, Rosalie, That ridiculous scandal weeks ago–the photos of you drunk at that party–was humiliating. Do you have any idea how much shame you’ve brought upon us?”
I clenched my hands together, trying to keep my voice calm. “I made a mistake, and I take responsibility for it. I’ve already apologized.”
“Oh, please.” She rolled her eyes. “An apology doesn’t erase disgrace. You are nothing but an outsider–an item brought into this family to embarrass usi
Her words cut, but I refused to let them show on my face.
“I am Damien’s wife,” I said evenly.
She let out a bitter laugh. “A wife who can’t even keep her husband satisfied.”
My stomach twisted. My nails dug into my palm.
“What?”
She leaned forward slightly, lowering her voice like she was revealing some great truth. “Did you think I wouldn’t find out? Damien kissed another woman and the video was uploaded to the internet. Whose fault is that, if not yours?”
1 felt the air leave my lungs.
She continued, her voice dripping with cruel amusement. “You can’t keep your husband happy, so naturally, he looks elsewhere. Maybe if you were more of a wife to him, he wouldn’t be tempted.”
The rage inside me ignited so quickly, I barely had time to think.
stood up so fast the glass on the table rattled.
You want to talk about faults?” My voice was shaking, not from fear, but fury. “Then let’s talk about yours.”
Her eyes widened slightly, clearly not expecting me to fight back.
“If your son is the kind of man who betrays his wife,” I spat, “then that’s your failure, not mine. You raised him. You taught hum what was right and wrong If he’s a brute, then you are the one to blame.”
Her face twisted in rage
“How dare you—
She lunged furward, her hand raised, but I caught her wrist before she could strike me.
Her eyes burned with fury, and we stood there, locked in a silent battle.
Then the door opened
And Damien walked in
His mother gasped dramatically, and two before I could even react, she suddenly collapsed unto the floor
“Damien she walled clutching her chest as if she were in immense pain. “She hit me!”

I let go of her wrist immediately, stepping back, but it was too late. She had already thrown herself onto the floor, her face twisting into a perfect picture of distress.
Damien’s gaze flickered between us, confusion and something unreadable in his eyes.
“Rosalie,” he said slowly, his voice laced with uncertainty.
I took a breath, trying to control the storm brewing inside me.
“She’s lying.” I said evenly. “She tried to hit me, and I stopped her. That’s all.”
“She attacked me!” his mother shrieked, cutting me off before I could say more. “I came here, trying to make peace, and she -she assaulted me!”
I clenched my jaw.
This woman. This manipulative, conniving woman.
Damien’s eyes locked onto mine, searching.
1 waited for him to say something. Anything.
But he didn‘
And the silence between us spoke louder than any words ever could.
