Time passed. My daughter’s first birthday
arrived. Lu Ming and I threw a grand party for
her, inviting friends and family. He made her a
huge cake, and he was taking pictures,
looking lovingly at her.
I watched, smiling. I needed my lighter and
began searching, finding a medical report in a
hidden compartment.
It stated that Lu Ming was perfectly healthy. I
stared at the report, then looked at Lu Ming,
who remained calm.
“A little white lie,” he said lightly. “I’ll explain
