Chapter 5
Ignoring the heavily pregnant Starla, Samuel hurried down the steps and approached me first.
“Well, Starla just wanted to find someone to marry, so she thought she’d hang around the civil affairs bureau. She didn’t want to go alone, so she asked me to come with her,” Samuel said, looking at me with a pleading expression.
I almost laughed at Samuel’s absurd lie–it was so ridiculous, he really thought I was that naive.
Seeing I didn’t respond, Samuel even turned back to give Starla a subtle look.
“Starla, you know we spent all afternoon trying to find someone suitable for you to marry. Don’t you think you should treat me and Cass to dinner as a thank–you?”
Reluctantly, Starla stepped down, rolling her eyes at me.

I looked at Samuel, his posture defensive and gave a sarcastic smile.
“I was just kidding. Do you really need to take it so seriously? Don’t you think you’re a bit too invested in Starla’s business?”
Samuel‘ s expression softened when he heard this and he pulled me closer, wrapping his arm around my waist.
“Cass, I’ve only been taking care of
Starla because she’s your best friend. Don’t worry, you‘ re the only one in my heart.”
