When I could play a song, tears came to my
eyes.
My mom was watching over me. My hands
were getting better.
I was almost as good as I used to be.
I found a job teaching piano.
Life was getting better without Justin.
But sometimes, I had nightmares.
Justin was there with the chair.
I begged, but he didn’t care.
He smashed my hands.
く
Ashley was laughing.
“See? Justin broke your hands for me.‘

I’d wake up sweating.
Ashley came to the hospital after Justin left.
She laughed at me.
“So sad,” she said. She looked cruel.
“Look at your hands. How are you going to
play tomorrow?”
I tried to attack her, but she kicked me.
“Don’t get my clothes dirty!”
く
I just lay there.
The memory hurt.
My phone rang.
It was a number I didn’t know.
Chapter 8
They didn’t say anything when I answered.
“Hello? Is anyone there?”
Finally, I heard a voice.
“Jenny.”
It was Justin.
He said “I’m sorry” and hung up.
The next day, I saw him standing outside my
apartment.
He looked awful. He wasn’t the same Justin.
He saw me and his face lit up. “Jenny, I found
you.”
“What are you doing here?”
He looked sad.
“I’m sorry, Jenny,” he said, “I was wrong. I
can’t live without you.”
“Really? You make me sick.”
Г
He flinched.
He came closer, but he stopped when he saw
me tense up. “What can I do to make you
forgive me?”
I just said, “Break your own hands.”
He smiled. “Is that the only way?”
I didn’t answer.
He left.
I didn’t believe him.
He was with Ashley not long ago. Now, he
was acting like he loved me.

He destroyed my life.
Now that I was doing better, he wanted to
bother me.
