Chapter 8

Through sobs, Caleb asked me where I had buried my mother’s ashes.
But I didn’t tell him.
He had treated her with nothing but cold indifference while she was alive, and now he didn’t deserve to pretend like he cared.
Life doesn‘ t hand out second chances.
A week later, I boarded a plane to leave the country.
When Caleb realized I was gone, he hadn’t even stopped to change out of his pajamas. He sped to the airport, probably pushing the gas pedal through the floor.
At the entrance, I heard his desperate voice calling out to me.
“Lily! Please, just turn around! Look at
me!”

Chapter 81
“Don’t leave me. Don‘ t leave me
alone.”
“I love you! I love you!”
But I didn’t stop. Dragging my suitcase behind me, I kept walking.
I didn’t look back.
Later, friends back home told me that Caleb’s hair had gone white practically overnight. He‘ d completely lost it, going mad as he searched for any trace of me.
He even traveled abroad to look for me, but the world was vast, and he couldn’t find me. Meanwhile, I threw myself into my work.
My research became my entire world.
Everything that had happened before started to feel like a blurry, distant memory of something I’d finally woken up from.
But it was time to move forward. It was time to focus on my work.
