Chapter 4
We both tried to pretend that nothing had ever happened, that I still knew nothing about it.
In the year since we married, neither of us mentioned Yolanda or our wedding night. We both, without saying a word, chose to forget.

In front of everyone, Kevin and I were the
perfect, loving couple.
No one brought up Yolanda, yet every time they looked at me, there was always that trace of pity in their eyes.
I remained in Yolanda’s shadow.
It seemed like she had never truly left.
Kevin and I visited Grandpa.
His health had deteriorated. Since our wedding, he had been in and out of the hospital for
treatment.
Grandpa made Kevin leave the room. He said he had something important to say to me.
1
“Noe, Grandpa’s getting old. The thing I worry
about the most now is you.”

His weathered face was etched with deepening
wrinkles.
His hands, frail and heavily lined, resembled the gnarled bark of an ancient tree.
He patted my hand with the strength he could muster, looking at me carefully, as though to remind me of something important.
“You need to have your own career. Noe, you’ve suffered enough these past years, but good fortune is waiting for you ahead.”
“Noe, take this bank card. It’s my way of helping you, my little gift.”
Grandpa didn’t know much of what had
happened, but he still gave me what he thought
was best for me.
I silently took it.

Holding his hand gently, a flood of thoughts surged within me, yet I hesitated to voice them. I feared that if I spoke, it would only cause him worry, and make him overly concerned for my well–being.
He wasn’t in good health anymore. I shouldn’t burden him with everything.
I had to bear it on my own.
On the way home, the car was eerily quiet.
He didn’t speak, and neither did I.
I contacted a local orchard owner, thinking of starting a canned fruit business.
I had to keep pushing forward, living, so that Grandpa could rest easy.
The rest of the ride was silent, save for the
occasional sound of my phone ringing.

But that evening, Kevin came to my room.
Once a month, we still had our intimate
moments.
It was as if he had become a machine, merely completing a task. He had changed a lot.
He started being really nice to me, but I still had my reservations.
I couldn’t bring myself to hate him, yet I
couldn’t love him either.
We simply played the role of husband and wife, and that was enough.
But I never expected that, during my visit to the
orchard, I would suddenly pass out.
I woke up in a hospital room, and the doctor told me I was pregnant.

I went silent. I hadn’t expected this. In just one
year, I was pregnant.
I hadn’t even been prepared for it.
I held the pregnancy test results, still unsure of
how to tell Kevin when I got home.
1 gently placed my hand on my belly, unable to shake the thought: Is this really my child?
I began to feel a flicker of hope. I thought, I’ll be
excited to welcome this child. I’ll learn to be a
good mother.
I’ll have a little family of my own.
I had so much I wanted to share with Kevin
today. I had a successful visit, the factory was ready, and soon it would be up and running.
My career, and now this child, I wanted to tell
him everything

But before I could speak, the course of events
took a turn I never anticipated.
Kevin stabbed me with a knife, aiming for my
heart.
It seemed like something had triggered him. The moment I saw him, I sensed something was
wrong.
Before I could react, he lunged at me, stabbing a fruit knife into my chest.
The searing pain in my heart made me crumple to the floor, gasping for air.
But the blood soaked through my clothes, and he pulled the knife from my chest.
Tears blurred my vision. I could hardly hold back
the scream for help.
But Kovin covered my mouth whispering softly.

in my ear,
“I love you, I love you…”

The moment the words left his lips, he thrust the knife deeper into my heart.
The man before me kissed me madly, but the knife in his hand didn’t stop.
I trembled uncontrollably, disoriented, not understanding why I was dying so quickly.
Had I done something wrong?
He stabbed me seven times, each one straight
into my heart.
Just before I closed my eyes, I finally understood. It seemed like I was going to die.
I had promised Grandpa would succeed.

Today, I became a mother.
I hadn’t had the chance to tell Kevin yet.
He was going to be a father.
I wanted to speak, but in the end, before my consciousness faded, the last thing I saw was
Kevin’s back.
He couldn’t bring himself to look at me.
But why?
I’ll never understand, even in death. How could someone who had promised to live a good life with me do something so extreme?
