The only thing I could do was follow them; there was nothing else I could accomplish.
But on an ordinary day, as I was on my way to
find Kevin, I saw the news on the large screen of the building.
Kevin had been arrested.
Just a month after my funeral, he was taken away by the police.
I could hardly contain my laughter, but tears
came first.
I turned and headed for the police station.
The scapegoat had turned state’s witness; he could no longer endure life in prison.

He had named Kevin.

My grandfather was also at the police station, and I hadn’t seen him in a long time.
The last time I saw him was at my funeral.
I watched my grandfather’s calm demeanor as
he handed over the collected evidence to the
officer.
Seeing him seek justice for me reminded me of when I was eighteen.
He stood before me, fighting for the dignity and
fairness I deserved.
Surprisingly, Kevin quickly confessed to killing
- me.
Yet Yolanda still remained unexposed.

He instinctively shielded Yolanda.

“Why did you kill Noelle?” the officer asked.
Kevin paused for a moment before breaking into
a smile.
“She ruined my lover.”
“My lover died in a car accident because of her. Am I wrong to make her pay for it?”

I stared at Kevin, and in that moment, I seemed
to see another version of him.
The Kevin I had admired in my youth.
Our second meeting had been on a rainy day.
I had forgotten my umbrella on my way to the
library.

As I waited for the rain to stop at the entrance, he appeared again.
He said, “Are you the little heiress of the Clayton family? Did you forget your umbrella?”
“If you don’t mind, why don’t we share?”
He was the embodiment of my youthful dreams.
He was so kind that I couldn’t help but be drawn
to him.
While everyone else looked down on me, he stood up for me.
We had a beautiful beginning, just like the protagonists in every novel.
But I had forgotten that I was never the one holding the heroine’s script.
He loved Yolanda

Only now do I understand the depths of that
love.
Why would he be willing to kill me for her?
Why make an innocent person pay for Yolanda’s
fate?
The officer was the first to pose the question.
“Mr. Corbyn, did your wife do anything wrong?”
“Is it really necessary to place the blame on
someone else?”
A flicker of disgust crossed the officer’s eyes.
“Kevin, please answer my question seriously.”
“Was it Yolanda who died on the Skyway that
day?”
“We now have serious reason to suspect that

this was a premeditated murder.”
“We reviewed the surveillance footage from the road where Yolanda was driving that day, and it appears she wasn’t alone in the car…”
He paused.
“There was also a woman named Eloise. From
what we understand, Eloise didn’t always look
like she does now.”
The officer pulled up a photo; it was the face of
Eloise I had seen before.
Ordinary.
But the other photo revealed a face I didn’t
recognize.
Somewhat resembling Yolanda, yet distinctly
different.
