His expression was as if he was looking at a heinous criminal.
This slap scattered the last bit of affection between us.
I glared at the couple in front of me, then suddenly walked over and slapped Derek twice on the face.
I used almost all my strength. Derek’s cheeks immediately swelled up, and he looked at me in disbelief.
“Lily, are you crazy? How dare you hit me?!”
I looked at my swollen right hand and laughed coldly, “You hit me first. Why are you so angry now?”
“Do you think you can bully me, the eldest daughter of the Carte Miles
family, as you please?”
Derek’s mother heard the commotion and hurriedly came over to mediate, “Lily, Derek was just momentarily angry. Don’t take it to heart.”
Seeing that my expression hadn’t softened at all, she quickly pulled Derek’s sleeve, blinking her eyes repeatedly.
This was the first and only time Derek had ever raised a hand against me. I could see that he was a bit nervous too.
But perhaps because Chloe was there, or perhaps due to male pride, Derek turned his face away, unwilling to apologize to me.
“Derek!” Derek’s mother shouted loudly. She knew that if we continued to be at an impasse like this, the one who wouldn’t benefit would definitely be Derek.
“I was indeed momentarily agitated just now, but if you had just obediently come down to eat with Chloe earlier, none of this would have happened.”
His words were far from an apology to me; between the lines, he was still blaming me for not being sensible.
My heart instantly sank to the bottom. I didn’t even go down for dinner that night.
All evening, I didn’t encounter that family again. It was Mrs. Wilson who, feeling sorry for me, brought dinner to me.
The next day, I slept until noon before getting up. Seeing them about to have lunch, I left the house without looking back.
My company assistant told me that somehow, everyone had heard that Derek had brought back a pregnant woman after his six–month business trip. There was a lot of gossip about me in the company.
Just half an hour after I left the house, Derek sent me a message asking me to bring back two boxes of supplements for Chloe when I
returned.
He also said I should buy her some jewelry as an apology for angering her yesterday.
That commanding tone made me laugh.
I calmly replied, “If you want to eat, you can arrange it yourself.”
As soon as the message was sent, Mrs. Wilson told me that Chloe had taken all the health supplements my mother had just sent me, saying they were good for the baby in her womb.
I asked, “What did they say?”
Mrs. Wilson replied angrily, “Derek’s family was overjoyed, saying that as long as it’s something she wants or wants to eat, she should just ask for it.”
My mother arranges for someone to send me a batch of supplements every three months, just to make sure I take care of my health.
I never expected that my mother’s thoughtfulness would end up benefiting them.
Even Derek’s mother, who usually knows her place, agreed to this, I didn’t need to save face for them anymore.
Since they treated me like this, why should I still maintain their dignity!
