The neighbors hated them.
I didn’t pity them, all I felt was the sweet taste
of revenge.
Two days later, my parents came to see me.
They looked a lot older.
As soon as she saw me, my mom yelled.
“I shouldn’t have given birth to you!” she spat
at me, “Now you need to tell people that you
lied about everything! You’re the reason that
the family is broken!”
I wasn’t surprised.
I’d already accepted who they were.
I turned to my dad, “What do you say, Dad?”
He looked at me and lowered his head.
Like he’d been for over twenty years.
I smiled, “Mom, Dad, you guys need to
understand something.”
“The one who’s going to take care of you is
L
me, not Tiffany.”
“If you guys keep trying to hurt me, I’ll just disappear, and you can sue me. We’ll see if
the child support fee is enough to let you live
a comfortable life!”
My mom pointed at me with a trembling
finger, but she couldn’t say anything.
Finally, my dad pulled her away.
“So what’s next? Are
you going back to
work?” Sarah asked me.
I shook my head.
When I quit, my boss tried to talk me out of it.
When she found out what happened, she said
I could go back whenever I wanted.
But honestly, I was too tired.
“I think I need a break, and then I’ll give
Tiffany the grand finale.”
That night, I booked a flight.
Sarah couldn’t come with me, so I went on my
L
own.
While I was traveling, I kept an eye on Tiffany.
Because of how crazy the story was, it
became trending for over a month. Tiffany’s
condition got worse because of it.
She got sent to the hospital.
During that time, I’d get messages from Jake.
He missed the old days, he loved me.
He sounded so regretful.
Sarah said that Jake and Tiffany were fighting
a lot.
They didn’t have a job, so my parents were
supporting them.
And my parents weren’t happy with them.
Meanwhile, I was seeing the world, having a
blast.
“Hey.” A black guy with terrible Chinese tried
to hit on me. He was tall and a little
intimidating.
He had full lips, and big white teeth, “Chinese
<
girls are pretty, I really like Chinese girls.”
I smiled politely, “Thanks.”
I started to walk away, but he followed me,
and blocked my path, “I just came to China.”
“Can I add you on WeChat so that you can
teach me Chinese?”
“I’m sorry,” I said. “Your Chinese is great.”
When I turned him down, his face got angry. I
got a little scared, and I started to move
toward a crowded area. He wouldn’t leave me
alone, and then all of a sudden someone put
an arm around my shoulder.
The familiar sight of yellow skin gave me
some relief.
He put me behind him, and said to the man
with a serious tone, “This is China!”
The black guy looked angry, but he turned
and left.
My heart finally stopped racing, “Thank you!”
“No problem,”
