With that, I turned and left the hospital, grabbing a cab to the airport.
Nora followed the nurse to the ward and saw Jasper’s vital signs were stable, though his face was pale. She let out a deep breath.
She brought over the chicken soup she’d made, looking at him with care wanting to feed him.

“You’re finally awake. I was so worried. I made this soup just for you, have a taste.”
Jasper squeezed her hand, “Thank you, Nora. It’s good to see you as soon as I wake up.”
Nora smiled, but as she passed the bowl to Jasper, her hands trembled.
The porcelain bowl shattered on the floor, hot soup splashing on her pants.
Panic welled up in her chest.
At that moment, her phone rang in the silent ward.
Her assistant’s voice came through, “Ms. Nora, Jasper got into a car accident on his way back. There was an explosion at the scene, and it looks serious.”
“What did you say?”
Nora didn’t take in anything else. She turned to leave, but Jasper grabbed her arm.
“Nora, what’s going on? I heard you on the phone, what happened to my brother?”
He feigned concern, but his eyes showed no worry.
Jasper just didn’t want anything to distract Nora from him.
The next second, Nora shrugged off his hand and hurried out.
“I’ll go check it out, you stay here and rest.”
Her voice was cut off by the closing door.
Outside the hospital, Nora sped to the accident site. Seeing the fire still burning, her legs almost gave out.
As she tried to approach, a traffic cop stopped her.
“Sorry, it’s too dangerous ahead. No one is allowed near.”
Nora’s eyes were fixed on the scene, her voice trembling, “I’m Jasper’s wife, my husband is in there, please let me see him, just for a moment!”
But no one paid attention to her pleas.
Police and ambulances sped by, sirens blaring, as Nora collapsed in despair, praying I’d be safe.
Hours later, the police had registered all the victims and started contacting families.
But Nora couldn’t find my name on the list.
She was stunned, grabbing her assistant for answers.
But the assistant was just as clueless.
“I was the one who called the car for Mr. Jasper. It was rear–ended, yes, but I don’t know why Mr. Jasper wasn’t inside. Maybe the police
missed something?”
Soon, Nora found the taxi driver in the hospital, getting his wounds treated.
That’s when she learned that I’d asked to stop on the overpass and got out of the car.
But the driver didn’t know where I was now.
Relieved to know I wasn’t hurt in the accident, Nora soon started wondering about my whereabouts.
She took out her phone to call me, only to hear a mechanical voice saying that my phone was turned off.
As a sense of unease crept over her, my parents arrived at the hospital.

Seeing her, they started asking questions right away.
“Nora, do you know where Jasper is? He suddenly called us, said a lot of things that sounded like farewells, and even transferred a large sum of money to us. Now we can’t reach him at all.”
