- 2.
I’d been anonymously funding Liam’s
education ever since high school.
He sent me these long, heartfelt thank–you
notes, saying he could earn his own way now
and didn’t need my help anymore.
But then, not long after, he contacted me
again, asking for a loan for his “sister’s”
medical bills.
That’s when I asked to meet him.
Liam looked surprised when he saw me. “It’s
you!”
I was shocked he remembered me and
recognized me.
く
The sister he always talked about was Ashley,
his childhood friend.
I felt responsible for Liam. So, I helped him
pay Ashley’s medical expenses.
After college, I offered to send Liam to
Europe to get his masters, but he asked for
another loan.
I knew what was up: Ashley wanted to study
abroad, too.
They thought they could use me as a
stepping stone, then ride off into the sunset
together.
I lost it.
“Do you think I’m stupid? I see what you’re
doing. If Ashley wants to go, then she can
take your spot.”
Liam swore up and down, “Ashley’s just a
friend, it’s not like that.”
But he still gave up his spot to Ashley.
So I made an offor right in front of Ashley
<
“Here’s the deal: from the moment Ashley
leaves, you’re staying with me. You know, as
my…companion, until she gets back.”
Over the years, I’d fallen for Liam.
But I also knew he felt protective of Ashley,
and grateful to me.
Ashley started crying, tugging on Liam’s
sleeve.
“Liam, don’t do it! I won’t let you do this for
- me. I can’t let her humiliate you.”
Liam looked down at Ashley, his eyes full of
pity.
He finally agreed to my terms, frowning.
I just rolled my eyes at Ashley’s fake tears. It
was sickening.
