Reborn: Refuse a Lethal Gift
01
Maggie asked with a bright smile, “Lina, could you hold onto my phone and debit card for me? The wedding’s about to start These are really important, so please don’t let them out of your sight.”
I instinctively stepped back a few paces, clutching my stomach in shock.
As I stared at the card in Maggie’s hand, it hit me. I had been reborn right at the start of the scheme.
In my previous life, everything happened just like this. Maggie had used the same excuse about the wedding kicking off an asked me to safeguard her phone and debit card, claiming the card contained gift money from her parents.
I had naively agreed, only to find out later that she publicly accused me of stealing the money in front of family and friends because the card was empty. It had led to her unstable husband, Logan, attacking and killing me.
This time, however, I took the card and phone with a smile of my own. “Don’t worry, Maggie. I’ll keep them safe for you.”
We both knew we were playing a game; now, it was just a matter of who would outsmart whom.
Soon after, I was pulled away by my aunt Miranda Anderson, who wanted me to meet some relatives.
Miranda announced, gesturing to the card, “This is what we gave our daughter for her gift money. Every penny of it is in the
and not a dime less.”
The miserly Miranda handing over such a large amount seemed off. I couldn’t believe how gullible I’d been in my past life.
“Mrs. Rachel Miller!” I called out as Logan’s mother, Rachel Miller, appeared.
I escorted her to a seat in the front row.
The wedding proceeded just as I remembered it.
Maggie looked blissfully happy on the arm of Logan, who gazed at her with softness.
Yet beneath this picture–perfect moment were a treacherous woman and a mentally ill man.
When the officiant handed the microphone to Maggie for her speech, she aimed her gaze straight at me, eyes gleaming with
the confidence of someone about to execute a perfect plan.
“As many of you know, my parents gave us a substantial amount of gift money, but it’s not without strings attached. All of it will go to my new home with my husband,” Maggie declared, and Rachel’s expression visibly lightened.
Maggie’s father, Vincent Anderson, and Miranda had demanded a whopping 1.88 million dollars as gift money and wanted the house titled in Maggie’s name, unusual since local customs dictated an amount of only around 180 thousand.
Rachel had grudgingly agreed to the money but not to the house deeded exclusively to Maggie.
Everyone knew Miranda’s indiscretion had ensured the hefty gift amount was no secret.
Publicly, people envied it; privately, they whispered about the bargain struck for marrying off a daughter to someone as volatile as Logan.
Maggie continued, “To prove that this isn’t about selling a daughter, I’ll show everyone the card balance and then personally hand it over to Logan’s mother.”
Her speech had the crowd in raptures, applauding wildly.
“Wow, it must be true love. We had it all wrong.”
“Maggie is such a good girl. You should take good care of her.”
