The wind drowned out everything else.
I put it together piece by piece.
Brittany went shopping with Leo, passed out,
and Mark took her to the hospital.
They forgot the kid.
When they went back, he was gone.
I went blank.
I just repeated,
“I have to find Leo.”
I went to the mall and looked all over.
Then I looked in the bushes.
Nothing.
Across the street,
A mom comforted her kid.
I ran toward them.
Was that Leo?
I was crazy and confused.
I forgot the horns.
I heard brakes and the impact.
I just heard Mark scream.
“Sarah, you haven’t atoned for Brittany yet.
You can’t die!”
Chapter Two
I woke up in the hospital, staring at the
concerned face of a doctor.
He seemed relieved to see me awake.
“Ms. Zhang, you’re finally awake. Your
husband is on his way,” he told me.
I was totally out of it, my brain a complete
blank.
Husband? What the hell?
I’m single as they come.
The door swung open and this guy walked in,
wearing a fancy suit that showed off his tall,
athletic build.
He had this majorly annoyed look plastered
on his face.
“Sarah, are you seriously trying to off yourself
over a kid?” Mark asked.
“Do you even realize how close you came to
dying?”
I frowned.
The second he showed up, my head started
pounding.
Every time he got near me, I felt like I was
Г
He saw me staring and got even angrier,
grabbing my hand.
“Sarah! Are you even listening to me?”
I yanked my hand away, my frown deepening.
“Buddy, get some help. You’re freaking me
out,” I said.
He blinked, then seemed to understand. He
gave a sarcastic laugh.
“Sarah, you think you can fake amnesia to get
out of this? Do you even know how many
times Brittany passed out trying to find Leo…”
He was getting worked up, and I rubbed my
temples, about to tell him to shut up.
But the doctor stepped in and pulled him out
of the room, looking pissed.
“She’s got temporary amnesia from the
accident. Don’t stress her out!”
“She’s still recovering. She can’t handle it,”
the doctor warned.
Mark frowned, looking confused.
Then, he seemed to relax.
“Well, that works out, actually.”
This way, they could go back to the way
things were.
Back in the room, I watched the woman in
front of me trving to keen my head from
exploding.
She’d been crying since she walked in.
“Sarah, it’s me, Brittany.”
“I know I screwed up. Just yell at me or hit
me or something.”
She looked like she was about to faint.
The veins in my forehead were throbbing.
Who the hell was this drama queen?
Didn’t the doctor say I needed to rest? Why
were these people bothering me?
I threw my teacup across the room. Brittany
screamed, clutching her face, with tea leaves
clinging to her cheek.
Mark heard the noise and came rushing in.
He saw me holding my head, looking like I
was in agony.
Brittany was covered in tea, and had a red
mark on her forehead.
Mark looked shocked, then furious.
I’d always been polite to Brittany. Why would I
throw tea on her?
