Chapter 14
I followed the organization to go back to my country, and I saw Professor Richard.
After traveling with Professor Richard, we finally arrived at the national secret research base.
That night, the leaders of the research base held a grand welcome ceremony and dinner for us.
Professor Richard proudly introduced my background, and I suddenly became the focus of everyone’s attention. This made me a bit nervous.
The leaders warmly shook my hand, and even some students came to ask for my autograph. I realized my name was well–known and they still remembered me.
When I was doing my PhD, my research achievements won many international awards.
No matter where I went, there was always admiration or praise.
Kingsley didn’t like these. He said they would distract my research, so he didn’t let me participate in award ceremonies. He even once asked me to reduce the number of papers I published.
After starting the business with Kingsley, I often heard that the success of the projects was mainly his credit, not mine. But I was working every day in the lab.
Kingsley received most of the honors in our lab.
Chapter 14
He was my husband, so I didn’t care much.
But after years of being together, I only received his cheating and disdain.
Facing the leaders and other people’s appreciative gazes, my confidence was slowly coming back.
Professor Richard introduced a handsome man to me, “Emelia, this is Frank Schuyler. Remember? I mentioned him to you several times. He’s in charge of this medicine project. If you have any problems, just ask him.”
I know Frank.
He got into the university a year after me and was the youngest rising star in the industry.
“Hi, Emelia. I’m so happy to meet you today!” Frank shook my hand politely.
“Mr. Schuyler, nice to meet you.” I had a good impression of him.
Frank smiled warmly. “Emelia, you’re Professor Richard’s favorite student. It’s too formal to call me Mr. Schuyler. Please just call me Frank.”
I nodded with a bit of embarrassment.
Professor Richard really liked me, or he wouldn’t invite me back to the national team five years later.
After the dinner, I started five years of closed research.
After getting in touch with the national research secrets, I found out that the achievements I made abroad were still too insignificant.
Five years later, with the joint efforts of the national team members, we
developed a new drug for Alzheimer’s.
The moment I walked out of the research base, I truly felt the five years of time slipping away.
After getting my phone from the organization, I turned it on, and countless messages and missed calls poured in.
Most of them were from Kingsley.
“Emelia, did you block me?”
“Why didn’t you answer my call? We said we’d get the marriage. certificate.”
“Emelia, I heard from your colleague that you resigned. How dare you? Can’t you stop making trouble!”
Oh, he still thought I was making trouble.
But soon Kingsley got anxious.
“Emelia, where are you? Answer me!”
“Emelia, why didn’t you reply? Can’t you be a little more responsible?”
“There are two research projects ongoing. As the core member of the team, how could you just leave?”
“Aren’t you mad at me? Come back. I’ll go with you to get the marriage certificate tomorrow, OK?”
Kingsley showed urgency at first, and he turned to beg me, but then he quickly became furious again.
“Emelia, my patience is limited! Today you must reply to me!”
‘We just didn’t get the marriage certificate on time. Are you giving up on our seven–year relationship just for this?”
“Mira thought it was because of her that you quit,
so hard. Her eyes were swollen!”
and you made her cry
“Did you use quitting to threaten me, or to force me? When did you learn to play such dirty tricks?”
I didn’t want to read further.
It seemed Kingsley never reflected on why we ended up like this today. It wasn’t just because he canceled the appointments for getting the marriage certificate thirty times.
And it wasn’t because of his relationship with Mira.
Without Mira, there would be other young and beautiful women.
The root of the problem was his irresponsibility towards our marriage.
But after five years, I didn’t want to dwell on the past again.
I quickly threw away the old SIM card, got a new one, and created a new WhatsApp account. I added back all my old colleagues and friends.
They all asked me what happened in these five years.
After knowing my experience and achievements, they all praised me.
And they told me that after I left, Kingsley got so angry in the lab. My departure forced the project to be suspended.
My post on Instagram before I left quickly got a lot of comments. Most of the people who knew Kingsley and me supported me.

Chapter 14
“Seriously? I remember Kingsley said he’d get the marriage certificate with you right after the wedding ceremony. It’s been five years, and you still haven’t?”
“You stayed in a foreign country for him and worked so hard for seven years! And you broke up just like that? What an ass!”
